My son has asked, why is it that when you blow on a dogs nose, they recoil because they don't like it, but when they're in your car they can't wait to stick their head out of the windows at 60mph?

really good answers everyone! I'm stuck as to who to vote best answer so my son is going to decide, many thanks to all for your insights.
p.s. We don't have a dog, he saw a friend of his doing it with his own dog, but I agree with the caution given about recoil or lunge reflex. Very helpful.

I really wanted to vote for JJ as an 11 thumbs up rating is hard to come by, but as Kayflower and Gemma were first with explanations to there answers he went with Gemma. Thank you all for your answers.

I'm sure you wouldn't enjoy someone blowing in your face either! Dogs have a very good sense of smell, so even though your breath may smell nice to humans, dogs will be able to pick up something that they don't like! And who doesn't enjoy the wind through their hair?

Dogs are like people! If someone blew real hard in your nose you would probably move back as well. But if you want to smell something or take in fresh air while riding a motorcycle you enjoy it and this is the same with a dog. You can train a dog to release a ball or object from its mouth by holding onto the dogs muzzle and the object and gently blow a short blow into their nostrils and say "release" and pull gently. The dog will learn what "release" means by doing this repeatedly. Before long, your dog will release on command without the short blows into the nostril! Hope this is helpful!

I agree with the smelly breath statement, but also want to add that when they have their head out the window it is like a buffet of smells to them since their sense of smell is so heightened. I also agree with the statement of the dangers of letting them hang their heads out the window...be careful and protect the pups!

i don't really know. i just wanted to warn people about letting their dogs hang their heads out the windows. its not really a good idea to let them do this. have you seen what a pebble kicked up from a vehicles tire does to a windshield? now imagine that is your dogs eye. please keep your dogs heads in the window. let the window down enough so the dog can get the air from inside the car, but not enough that it can stick its head outside the car.

I think i would enjoy sticking my head out of the window rather than have someone blow in my face!

one dog i have HATES it and if u blow on his ears he gets rather upset....but he is the same one who sticks his head out the window. the other dog could care less if i blow in his face but does not hang out the window!

the car allows for new smells so that is why they don't mind the wind. while blowin their face is dominate and rather rude...lol.

They don't like you blowing on their nose because it startles them, and might be annoying/offensive to them. They like to stick their head out the window because they want to smell everything that's whizzing past- their nose is like our eyes.
If you just hold your mouth open instead of blowing they'll sniff your mouth to see what you've eaten!

I would be more concerned about the fact that it seems your <10 year old son has been in a position to find out dogs don't like being blown on! He should stop wondering things like this, and think about how lucky he was that the dogs whos face he must have blown on recoiled and did not lunge.

Who wants someone blowing in their face? I like the fresh breeze blowing on my face, but don't want someone blowing on my face with their used up air... One is a nice experience, one is annoying.
