Yes they can, but it's not an ideal situation for a dog. Cats are easy to box train due to an istinctual desire to bury their waste...dogs are different. To box train a dog would take more time, and effort than a cat and you will likely have quite a few accidents to deal with. I feel that litter boxes, newspaper, and pee pads do nothing but encourage in-home elimination, and generally lead to the dog never being completely housebroken. Take the dog outside to pee/poop. It's easier on you and better for the dog

Is it Really Possible to Litter Box Train a Dog?

Absolutely! Small dogs can be trained to use a litter box. My personal experience shows that small dogs, once trained, actually benefit from using a litter box. Small dogs have small bladders, and the opportunity to "go whenever" is a big plus! It's also possible to train a dog to use a litter box that previously used papers or went outside. Dogs can also travel using the litterbox in other locations, and are able to use the litterbox during the day, as well as "go outside" at other times.

You sure can. Make sure it's large enough for the dog to go in and turn around in. Lower sides help, and don't put more than an inch and a half of litter in the bottom. Or use those pee pads on the bottom.

Some people use old baking sheets (rummage sales) for this. In a pinch, you can use a plastic sweater box, but put newspaper underneath, just in case the dog goes outside the box while standing inside.

Yes, but will probably need their own, possible with dog style litter.

Start as young as possible, and be prepared for it not to work. Dogs dont take to it nearly as well. They tend to get upset when walking on the litter because it is so unstable.

With my old chihuahua we ended up just buying pieces of sod and putting those in a litter box. She would go on the grass and we would just change it every few days.

I have a small dog and she is litter trained. Her bladder is smaller so it worked out better when i was at work it gave her a place to relieve herself. You train a dog to go potty in there just as you would outside... Constancy and praise. A friend of my trained her dog as well. Both of our dogs go potty outside now, but in the winter, they both refuse to even step outside so its a great alternative. Make sure you keep the box clean and keep fresh litter in there. You can get the boxes and litter at petsmart. Its not the same kind of litter as cat litter... its more like pellets.

I trained my Pom to use a litter box. It's the greatest thing because I never get woken up at 3 am to my dog wanting to go outside. It does take longer than training them to go outside, but it is well worth it. It took me about 2 months to train him completely, but he's never had any "accidents" since then.

I supposed you could but you'd end up with litter ever where and then he would become accustomed to going in the litter and when you took him out for walks wouldn't do his business.

We trained our dog to go in the exact same spot in the yard.
First you get him going on a puppy pee sheet by the door and gradually move it outside and let him go on it at the spot you want to use and keep the pee sheet there for a few days and then remove the sheet and wala, he'll go in that spot for ever and no crap all over your yard, or yellowed grass spots, just one. Good luck

Sure. Train him to use it just as you would train him to go outside. Take him to the box when he needs to eliminate. Keep him confined to a small area with the box when you can't supervise him. Praise him and give him a treat when he uses the litter box.

Dogs do not use a litter box, but you can train them to use a doggie pad, they sell these at most stores, but thef best way to train is outside, then you don't have to worry about as many accidents.

Don't know if you can "train" sm. dogs (rabbits however can be), but I had a sweet Pug yrs. ago who learnt on her own!
She just watched all my cats use litter boxes and I was shocked to find her in one too, doing her biz!
