I have been given an offer to work in a storage company in a customer services kind of role. Its not exactly glamorous and its not exactly my dream career (i don't know what I want to do with my life!) but it is 16.2k a year, which I could really do with. What do you all rekon? Should I take the job - do it for a year or so? or hold out for something a little bit more dream based??

I can relate to your struggles. I'm also an English graduate and I've had trouble getting work in my chosen field. As a result, I took a position that's good, but not quite what I'd dreamed of doing. Sometimes, you just have to take a job that you're overqualified for to gain more work experience. The job market is very similar to dating. You will always appear more desirable to the opposite sex (and employers) if you are already committed to someone else. I'm sure that your dream job would be more likely to hire you if you've shown that you have more experience, even if it's in a position that's not directly relevant.

Meanwhile, make the best of this new job. Try to go in with a positive attitude during your first week. Then you will be a successful employee. Your coworkers will like you because of your cheerful disposition. The job doesn't sound difficult, so I bet you'll do well and establish some good references. While you are there, you can always continue your search. Just remember to keep a low profile and don't let your employer find out. Then, if you find something, you can give a polite two weeks' notice, but wait until you've already been hired for another position. Good luck!

Take the job in the mean time, But i would apply to be a english teacher at a school, or maybe get your masters and teach college level, if you can talk in front of groups..

take the job

its always easier to get employment when you apply for it whilst in another job

so keep your eye open for that dream job , but make some money while doing it

all the best
