In this verse it mentioned "children of God" and "children of devil". the word Children does not litterally mean children as we understand today, for example, if a priest call you by the name "my son", that doesn't mean that you are his real son, but it's more as a spiritual relationship. but the word children of God means the follower of God or the servents of God.. and the Bible has many translator errors and these errors have mislead many.

In this the children of God are manifest, and the CHILDREN OF DEVIL: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
1 John 3:10

Peace to you.

Traditionally (in the Christian church), when a baby is baptised, the parents choose Godparents. Traditionally, if it's the couple's first child, the Godfather will be the child's father's eldest brother, and the Godmother will be the child's mother's eldest sister. It doesn't have to go like this though, sometimes the Godfather might be the child's eldest male cousin on the father's side and the Godmother the child's eldest female cousin on the mother's side. But again, it could just be any relations or could be friends of the parents. Godparents are present at the baptism and are meant to provide spiritual guidance throughout the child's life. Traditionally, the Godparents are meant to look after the child if anything should happen to his/her parents. These traditions are dying out though and nowadays, Godparents sometimes just send their Godchildren money on birthdays etc...

What's your problem then? In this context, "children" are those who follow one "parent" or the other.

But when it comes to true Christianity, it is written one must be born agian; of the Spirit, and these people are indeed the children of God.

1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

Throughout the bible God describes his relationship with us as one of a father and his children.

This is not an error and is not misleading.

So you're okay with this usage of "son of God" as a metaphor, fantastic. Any chance you can look at the bigger picture and realize the Christ myth uses exactly the same metaphor?

Yes, because God says we are his children and he is our heavenly father.
