My dog had a mast cell tumor removed a few weeks ago. Her stitches burst and were re-sewn. The vet told me if they burst again, there will not be enough skin to re-sew and to leave it open. It is now a 3" diameter wound and you can see the muscle underneath. I don't feel like I am getting good advice...any suggestions? Please, I'm desperate!

Often times when there is a wound over a high stress point this will happen, not the vets fault. If there is not enough skin to close it again, it will have to heal by 2nd intention (granulation, or scabbing over). The most important thing to do is keep it clean and DO NOT let him lick at it. You can wash it lightly a couple times a day with some antibacterial hand soap (dont use hydrogen peroxide, it kills cells and doesnt promote healing) pat it dry very well and then apply a antibiotic ointment (Triple antibiotic, neosporin etc just dont use anything with a pain reliever in it). Have you received biopsy results back yet? Mast cell tumors are very aggressive, need to make sure that the margins are clean and that is not why it keeps splitting open. Even with clean margins, there is still a high possibility of reoccurence. Good luck.

You can find out more about natural hemorrhoids cure here http://curehemorrhoid.info
Diarrhea can contribute to hemorrhoid formation because the bowel undergoes pressure strains due to the condition. Undue pressure on the veins that make up internal hemorrhoidal structures can worsen existing damage. Internal hemorrhoids are not visible, unless they proplapse (protrude) from the anus, either constantly or during a bowel movement. If this is the case, then you have a grade III or IV internal hemorrhoid. If the protrusion is on the anal verge or the area surrounding the anus, then its likely an external hemorrhoid. Reducing pressure from issues of diarrhea and constipation will help. Not straining during a bowel movement, not lifting heavy objects, not sitting for extended periods, all will help.

An external hemorrhoid is simply a vein located at the anal verge, the wall of which as weakened and protruded. Don't push on it, this will only increase pressure and worsen it. The body has to repair the vein wall and rebuild the integrity. This takes time, perhaps weeks, if all goes well. Use sitz baths and over-the-counter medications such as pads or creams to provide symptom relief in the interim. These won't solve the issue long term, but will give the tissue a better chance at self-healing.

Internal hemorrhoids are a different matter and require more intervention. Your best bet is to educate yourself about the condition, its causes and what options there are to treat it both short and long term. Don't ignore it though, hemorrhoids tend to become chronic in nature, lasting years or decades in some cases.

If ever you don't like the advice you getting from a vet, it's time to turn to another vet - not Y Answers!!

You're right, this doesn't sound like great advice. The wound probably shouldn't just be left - if something is going to be left open to heal, at a mimimum antibiotic cover is required. This doesn't sound like great surgical practice, it's going to leave a horrible scar for one thing. Did the vet give any reason for the wound to continually re-open? Like has the dog been running around while the wound was healing?

EDIT: Not glue - if stitches wouldn't hold it, how does G suppose glue will?

The suggestion of an obedience class is an excellent one. Read here https://tr.im/SIjnC
It will help your dog learn to behave around other dogs, and help keep your training moving forward as you'll want to be prepared for the next class. Also, a good instructor can be a wonderful resource, someone to help you with any questions or concerns about your dog. Leash training can take a LOT of time and patience, depending upon the dog. I'm not sure what you mean by 'horrible on a leash' but my basic suggestion is that you take a lot of yummy treats with you on walks. When your dog behaves well on the leash (not pulling) praise her and give her treats. Change direction a lot so that she learns to pay attention to YOU and where you are going. It's also helpful to teach a "Watch Me" command such that whenever your dog looks at you you praise her and give her a treat. About chewing, yes a Kong is a great chew toy. Some dogs also like Nylabone brand bones. I suggest also teaching a "Leave It" command. You use this when she shows interest in chewing on something she shouldn't. Then immediately give her something she is allowed to chew, such as the Kong stuffed with somethig yummy. This same command will be helpful on walks when she wants to sniff or eat something she shouldn't. Again, when she does leave the item alone, be sure to give lots of praise. I would look into an obedience class right away. I think that you'll find that a good obedience class can help enormously! Good luck and enjoy your new dog.

#1, I would find a different vet! There is nothing you can do yourself! If the would stays open, then it will most likely become infected, and the dog could be at risk of dying. Have a different vet take a look at him, poor baby! There are ways to at least cover the wound properly, to minimize infection. Good Luck! Hope she's better soon!

Go to the vet again. There must be another way to close the wound. Even if they can't suture the skin edges together, it needs to be covered with SOMETHING, or your dog will likely get infected. Even a bandage would be better than leaving it open.

I would consult another vet. If the wound is left open, theres a high chance it could get infected and this could kill your dog.
If its not able to be stitched again, there should be a dressing that they can put on it to protect it.

You could try glueing it clolsed. Any type of super glue or nail glue will work. Just pinch it closed with tweezers and apply the glue on top of the skin not inside the wound. Only takes a few minutes to dry. And you may have to do this about every three days until it finishes healing.

You need to see another vet and get a second opinion. Is the dog pulling the stitches out or was she poorly sewn up? You dog needs to be sewn up so infection doesn't set in. If your dog is chewing them out you need to put on a e-collar (Elizabethan-Collar).
