If women and men are equal, then why do women always seem like they are competing with the man? Just because you have two athletes who are equally matched against one another is no reason for one of them to not strive against the other in competition. Our competitive drive is what causes us to rise above the norm and achieve great or horrible things. I believe when the claim is made that, men and women are equal, it is in regards to certain inalienable rights we, as a people, are all entitled to. Are we really equal? in reality, aren't we different physically, mentally and emotionally? Yes, in those aspects, we are all different, but when you look at it from the overall standpoint, these things equal out. You say, "If we are equal why does a man have to open the door for women? Why are men required to join the army in many countries of the world, when women are not? Why are men more responsible in paying child support? Why do all of these situations happen? It is because of the religious morality in these countries. You will find, that in nations with a strong majority of people practicing an Abrahamic religion, women are denigrated into a subservient position. I will present you a few passages out of the Bible and Quran to prove that what I say is true. Here are the quotes from the Quran:
# 2:228 "(Women) have rights similar to those (of men) over them in kindness, and men are a degree above them."
# 2:282 "And call two witness from among your men, two witnesses. And if two men be not at hand, then a man and two women."
# 4:34 "Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them."
# 4:176 "Unto the male is the equivalent of the share of two females."
Here are some quotes from the Bible:
Genesis 3:16
Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
1 Corinthians 11:3
But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
Ephesians 5:22-24
Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
Colossians 3:18
Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.
1 Timothy 2:11-15
Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing.
1 Peter 3:1
Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands.
These are only a few of the many quotes that reinforce the idea of a woman being unequal to a man. Religion is slowly having it's grasp loosened and it's hold over humanity is slipping. As this happens, women have slowly gained ground in their quest for equal rights. I hope this has helped to answer your question.

*sigh* Someone has issues.
Yes, we are in general not the same as men biologically, chemically, intellectually or emotionally. Please note that "not the same" is not superior and it's not inferior. It's simply different.
There are places where women have no choice but to compete with men. Those would be places where pretty much everybody competes with everybody else - sports, business, and so on. In those areas, we are not insisting on complete equality. We are insisting on LEGAL equality - i.e. if I'm doing a better job than one of my coworkers who happens to be male, I shouldn't lose out on a promotion just because he is a man. I shouldn't be paid less for the same work as a man. I shouldn't face legal problems simply because I was born with more genetic material than my male counterparts.
Culturally it's a different thing. Women have been and always will be treated differently from men. The details of that have changed over the years and will continue to change, but I don't foresee that fundamental fact being altered any time soon. All we're asking for is not to let that become an excuse to keep us from doing what we can and what we love.
The rest of your examples are too numerous to mention separately. Just for example, though - men pay child support more than women because women tend to be the custodial caregiver after a divorce. In other words, the child lives with the mother. It rather makes sense, then, that the father pay child support. If the situation is reversed, then the woman pays the child support. There are similar obvious answers to every other one of your objections.
Oh - and you're free not to open any doors for me, as it seems to be a problem.

You're confusing equality and being the same, and railing about customs and tradition that may or may not cross cultural boundaries.
There are very few people that are the same physically, mentally or emotionally for example there are many women that can run a marathon faster than I, a male, can.
Equality is a concept that all humans should have the same rights under the law and should not be treated differently due to sex, race, beliefs or other factors. This concept is accepted by some societies and not others.

Anyone who believe men and women are exactly equal is blind and deaf and also not paying attention. Of course they're different, but the whole idea is that they should be complementary, not antagonistic. A man and a woman who work together create something greater than the sum of their 2 parts. Even in warrior society, a woman may choose to fight alongside man; if she does, she takes all the same risks and reaps the same rewards. The only absurdity about this is that men cannot bear children, no matter how hard they try. There are certain things only one sex can do. That is why cooperation, not competition, is absolutely necessary.

One might easily argue that men and women are not equal in many respects. When we talk about equality for the sexes, we should probably focus less on the equality of men and women (a difficult prospect at best) and more on the equality of the opportunities available to men and women. When a business offers itself as an "equal opportunity employer" it is proclaiming its policy that it will consider the bona fide qualifications of its applicants and hire the best match for the job.
Your example of compulsory military service is a good example of how some jobs are regarded as male-oriented, although women are (in most military roles) eligible to compete for the same jobs that men historically have filled. Not all women will meet the physical requirements of the jobs they seek (but some will); men (as you observe) are generally better suited physically to these jobs, so they are more likely to acquire them (but some won't).
One might also argue that men are already competitive with each other, generally speaking, so by competing with women, they are providing "equal opportunity".

We are equal, but different. Why is that so hard for people to understand? The only reason some women feel the need to compete is because some men have used the physical differences (their strength) to hold women back. Those men are/were nothing but bullies and cowards.
God Bless.

There are these things called human rights....those are equal between the two counterparts that make up the human race. Women have the same rights as men, children have rights, the unborn have rights, the elderly, disabled and mentally challenged all have rights. The same rights as everyone should have..except that there are governments and principalities on the earth that don't see it that way and so they trample on those rights and freedoms...
Differing to someone or showing them respect with regard to customs, manners, abilities and challenges in varying different cultures has nothing to do with equality...it has to do with dignity and maturity.
Equality is only on paper and it doesn't shut people up...obviously...it should be a given for all people to have the same rights as others no matter what the criteria...race, religion, creed, age, sex and etc. Its not that way however, is it...mostly because of people that are bigoted. Love in Christ, ~J~

Because women were thought to be less that man for so many years. And many people still believe that. So women has to prove herself. And what's wrong with a women doing "jobs that a man does", are you afraid of the competition? And equal doesn't mean identical, it means we have equal rights and equal duties, and equal capabilities.
