If the diarrhea continues for more than a day or two, or has blood in it, you need to take your dog to the vet.
Meanwhile, if he is drinking water, try not feeding for at least 24 hours, then give a little white meat chicken, skinless, boneless, mixed with rice.
The vet can prescribe a high fibre food, such as Science Diet A/D which is basically chicken and rice too, but you can try making this mix yourself at first. Do not feed your dog anything else until the diarrhea stops.
You don't say how old your dog is, so I am assuming he is an adult dog, fully vaccinated.
Diarrhea in an unvaccinated puppy is very dangerous and could be indicative of a serious disease, so definitely need to get a puppy to the vet right away.

Diarrhea is a symptom but you need to find out the cause. To stop the loose stools, feed the dog some canned pumpkin. Not the pie filling as it has seasonings added, but the plain pumpkin which is usually located in the same area of the grocery store as the pie filling.

Man I had my Doberman went thru that in his first SIX , yes SIX months I had him. Took him to the vet and he basically sent me home with this awful looking canned dog food and sent me home. Well I feed him rice and bread and this bland wet food I got. Within 3 to 4 days sure enough, regular, firm looking " land mines " were produced. Called the doc. with the results and said " yep it's dietary" and not something more serious.
Cheap Purina Dog chow is just that cheap. I switched to Kibbles and bits and never waiver and never looked back.
Don't switch around on brand and buy quality nutritious food.
Good luck and oh yeah - LOOK WHERE YOU STEP.

If this has been going on non stop for over 24 hours, I would see the vet. If it was just one instance, I would wait to see how your dog does. Sometimes a sensitive stomache, and eating something "out of the norm" can cause a bout of this.

Your dog probably ate something bad or,
"The Runs" can be a symptom of tapeworms. If it is tapeworms then be on the lookout for little pinkish colored worms around your dog's anus and eventually the massive "worm" parasite will be thrown up or pooped out. When tapeworm is contracted it lives in the intestines of the host, feeding off the food that you eat. When my dog had tapeworm, it lasted for a few weeks i think. He had it when he was a pup when we first got him, and he wasn't potty trained. Imagine the mess!

Well if he didn't get into something to make him sick, if you didn't change his food.. Then it's possible that he needs to see the vet and find out what's wrong.. Might be Giardia, Coccidia, might be worms.. Might be anything.. Diarrhea is a symptom of a problem.. Don't treat the symptom,, go to the vet and diagnose the problem and treat that..

1, vets
2, feed rice, scrambled egg, and a little chicken.
add a little gravy to make it more appetising.
keep him/her on this for 3 days as it's a lighter meals and will help "bind" the dog up
make sure plenty of fresh water is available at all times.

Sounds like your dog needs to be seen by a vet. Could be worms which can be life threatening, other internal parasites or maybe dietary indiscretion or maybe both.

1. have you changed his diet?
2. has he gotten into something ?
3. is he running a temp?
Pepto Bismol will work, but take his temp . the pepto is a quick fix but if he is drinking enough water? make sure he is not dehydrated.
If it has continued take him to the vet and have him checked out.

I would take him to the vet but in the meantime I would add some cooked rice to his food. This should help firm him up.
