This is a good question. The answer is that when civilization arose, with its hierarchical class structure where everyone has to know their place, things began to change. This is as early as Sumer--the first known civilization. The more "primitive" a people are, the more egalitarian they are as well. Also, wherever there is frequent warfare women are not treated well and often become the "spoils" of war. War and civilization go hand in hand. Frequent raiding is also common in region's of scarcity--like the desert.

Deeply, very few religions claim women are less than men. The Bible does not, despite what people have said about it. In Genesis 5:1-2 the equality of both and woman comes through. "He called their name Adam..." When it says he "created man in his likeness" it must be understood that Man means "humanity", as in Mankind. In Matthew 22:23-30, the Sadducees ask Jesus a trick question about marriage and the resurrection. His response is both revolutionary and common sense. It challenges how we see sex relations for sure.

Mostly only the Abrahamic religions.

And then I wonder what the heck is wrong with them.

Woman were taken from men's rib.. seriosuly.

You'd think women would be thoguht of a demi-goddeses ro soemthing. Afterall, women are the ones who create new life. The oens who feed the men. The ones who keep the whole of society standing on its feet.

In the Abrahamic religions, woman ARE not treated as equals, no doubt of that.

Friend,

I do not know about other religions.

I can only say in Hindu religion ,woman is given utmost respect and a never looked inferior to man.

for example the Ultimate deity one prays is PARA SHAKTI or AADI SHAKTI....both are female forms.

We have Goddess Laxshmi,Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Parvati whom every Hindu worships.

Mother is given the first place and it is daily recoited as below:

Maatru Devo Bhava,

Pitru Devo Bhava,

Aachaarya Devo Bahva

Athithi Devo Bhava.

You can see that mother is in the first place.

The vedas which are the authority declare that PURUSH(Man) without a Shtree (Woman ) is powerless and incomplete.

The religion preaches that all ladies are to be respected as mothers and given first place.

Even while naming the couples the lady name comes first.See these: Umaa Maheswarulu,Paarvati Parameswarulu. Seeta Raamulu.Laxkshminarayanulu.Rad... etc.

there are great lady saints like Lopaamudra,Anasuya,Arundhati etc whom we take as model roles and worship.

Swmy Vivekananda ,in his visit to US for participating in Parliament of Religions started his speed ''My Dear SISTERS AND BROTHERS OF AMERICA''

So in my opinion in Hinduism the women are honoured first and the men come next.

There are a few religions where they are equal or that women are superior. I'd make an educated guess that it's because many religions were made up in male dominated societies and we make up gods in our own image.

Not strictly true, as goddesses held very powerful positions in the religion of the Ancient Greeks and Romans and CERTAINLY in pagan religions.
That said, all religions are invented by men and they wish to suppress the natural power of women.

Because when the three major religions were created men were in charge of most everything and women had few rights so the religions they created reflected those days.

Because our world is skewed.

Women only do the most important, essential tasks of life.

Men make the grand mistakes, and so, are highly rewarded and admired as superior to women.

Give paganism a look (wicca in particular). Women are treated as equals (or often as superiors depending on the Tradition)

I don't believe men are treated superior to women in Wicca. I'm not a follower of Wicca, but that is my understanding--that it couldn't be considered patriarchal.

Everytime God created, he created a higher form of life. Woman was the final, and greatest expression of his creation. I think some male entities resent this.

Womans subjection to man was the very first sin that entered the world after the 'fall', and it has fueled the mysery of humanity ever since.

the Male part of us is our mind and the Female is the soul. The soul needs to have full expression for the world to be restored to divine balance.

Its the lesson humanity has to learn, and one more reason that the truest religon is the absence of religon.
