Yeah, check out Exodus and Leviticus and Numbers in the bible, there are hundred of things that say women are unclean for seven days after their period and should stay outside the town and then have a good wash and sacrifice two doves when all is well again. And men are unclean for seven days after ejaculating - I think a lot of men will just have to leave the town entirely!
It's not really done anymore, same as how we don't sacrifice our animals or stone people to death.

I will answer the question, i just hope people don't misinterpret it. In Islam (my religion - I'm Muslim by choice, the hint was about that in a previous answer lol) it is said that women during periods are unclean. If you think about it, having blood coming out from there isn't exactly clean is it lol But this does not mean to disrespect women at all. In fact, a husband cannot touch (not literally) his wife while she is in her menses and also she cannot pray when in her menses and she should not fast either. To do all these things she has to wait until the end of the cycle.

I think most religions tend to regard women during their period as being ceremonially unclean. It is perhaps also a relief to the woman that she is so particularly in some cultures

this is a comparison between the three religions(Judaism,Christianity, Islam)
concerning the point you asked about:
*Judaism
When a woman has a blood flow and that of the blood flows from her body, she will remain for seven days in the stain of her period. Who will touch her will be impure until evening. All layer on which she will lay stained, will be impure; all furniture on which she will sit will be impure. Whoever touches her bed will have to clean his clothing, to be washed with water, and he will be impure until evening. If some object is located on the bed or on the furniture on which she sat, the one that will touch it will be impure until evening
*Christianity
The woman was the origin of the sin, and it is because of her that we all die (catholic bible)
*Islam
Does not consider that the woman in period possesses a sort of "contagious impurity " as in some other religions. She is nor " untouchable " nor " cursed ". She practices her life normally and respectfully with only two restrictions:
1. A married couple is not authorized to have intimate relations during her period of menstruations.
2. A woman cannot carry out her prayer or her fasting during her period (for there is continuous flow while the total cleanliness is required -various flows of the body necessitate ablutions be it for the man or the woman-).

Isn't it funny that the many of the do's and don'ts in religion are based upon some kind of positive health benefit - ie: eating Pork, generally killed people 2000 years ago (so the Jews/Muslims) do not eat Pork now.
Circumcision; reduced the amount of infection in your nether regions.
Washing before eating, etc...
I suppose to a society that is a bit retarded, it would seem quite normal to believe that evil spirits could kill you for not killing your food correctly, and for not making sacrifices to their almighty nothings...

Absolutely, in fact, it's right in the bible.
Leviticus:
A man who has sex with a menstruating woman "shall be unclean seven days." 15:24
"Also thou shalt not approach unto a woman to uncover her nakedness, as long as she is apart for her uncleanness," Don't even look at a menstruating woman. 18:19
If a man has sex with a menstruating woman, they both "shall be cut off from among their people." 20:18

I think that I'm pretty sure all main religions has a say on this...but from readings from the Bible AND the Qur'an it is considered unclean.
What the Bible says about Menstruation
Leviticus 15:19-30
And if a woman have an issue, and her issue in her flesh be blood, she shall be put apart seven days: and whosoever toucheth her shall be unclean until the even. And every thing that she lieth upon in her separation shall be unclean: every thing also that she sitteth upon shall be unclean. And whosoever toucheth her bed shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even. And whosoever toucheth any thing that she sat upon shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even. And if it be on her bed, or on any thing whereon she sitteth, when he toucheth it, he shall be unclean until the even. And if any man lie with her at all, and her flowers be upon him, he shall be unclean seven days; and all the bed whereon he lieth shall be unclean. And if a woman have an issue of her blood many days out of the time of her separation, or if it run beyond the time of her separation; all the days of the issue of her uncleanness shall be as the days of her separation: she shall be unclean. Every bed whereon she lieth all the days of her issue shall be unto her as the bed of her separation: and whatsoever she sitteth upon shall be unclean, as the uncleanness of her separation. And whosoever toucheth those things shall be unclean, and shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even. But if she be cleansed of her issue, then she shall number to herself seven days, and after that she shall be clean. And on the eighth day she shall take unto her two turtles, or two young pigeons, and bring them unto the priest, to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. And the priest shall offer the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering; and the priest shall make an atonement for her before the LORD for the issue of her uncleanness.
Leviticus 20:18
And if a man shall lie with a woman having her sickness, and shall uncover her nakedness; he hath discovered her fountain, and she hath uncovered the fountain of her blood: and both of them shall be cut off from among their people.
Ezekiel 18:5-6
But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right, and hath not ... come near to a menstruous woman.....
..quote from the Qur'an
They question thee (O Muhammad) concerning menstruation. Say: It is an illness, so let women alone at such times.... Quran 2:222

Christopher Hitchens points out that most religions are deeply scared of the Birth Canal. Most gods, demigods or messiahs are born in strange ways that avoid 'contamination' by this most scary body part. Many religions have virgin births, people emerging from their mother's body via magical openings, etc.
Since religions are usually dreamed up by men - primitive men - they have a major psychological issue with women in general, and their genitalia in particular. Menstruation is obviously a terrible curse to such people.

as a muslim woman i am exempt from praying fasting and the like but we can have cuddles and hugs off our husbands ets its just that they not allowed to have intercourse and women in islam are not considered contagious or nothing like that
infact the reasons we cant pray etc is that women may tire easily due to period pains etc and they may find it draining on themselves due to hormonal changes
actually if a husband decided he wants to divorce his missus he cannot do so while she is on her period as this may cause even more undue stress

as a muslim we believe that a women is impure on her period, during this time a woman cannot touch the QURAN, she cannot pray and cannot have sexual intercourse until she has made gusl, gusl means clean yourself properly including hair.
basically it is dirty for a woman to be on her period.
also during this time we cannot enter a mosque.
