Let's just say for the sake of argument you grew up in a purely atheistic society and no one ever told you about God. You then stumble across a Bible in, say, your attic one day. Is it compelling enough by itself to convert you?

It's a book of wisdom, much like the Torah and the Koran. The stories are parables to make a point, like Aesop's Fables.

Well, the scenario you describe isn't dissimilar to my reality. I wasn't programmed in a religion growing up, nor was I even exposed to the bible. So, when I was older and began wondering what all the fuss was about, I read parts of the bible (including Genesis, Revelation and all of the "red letter" verses in the NT) and found that it was chock full of inconsistencies, self-contradictions and absurdities. And it wasn't even an interesting read.
Needless to say, it wasn't enough to convert me.

No. I was raised in a christian household and was told daily that the bible was true, and all I had to do was read it to know.
It was reading the bible that made realize that it couldn't possibly be true.

If I had never heard of the bible and stumbled upon it I would probably consider it just another book of mythology. Nothing more...

It would all depend on which of the over 50 different versions of the Bible in English you stumbled across. Then how would you know that the one you have is the correct version ?You don't have to be told there is a God to believe in one.You can work it out for yourself.

It is the best explanation I've found for why things are the way they are.

1. Why I do bad things despite the fact that I want to do good things.
2. Why there is pain and suffering.
3. What purpose for my life makes the most sense.
4. The complexity and vastness of creation.
5. Human nature
6. Why obedience makes me happy.
7. How a perfect God would be and act if one existed.

There are multiple other questions. The Bible answers them well, and without any conflict internal to itself. Also, we have more ancient manuscripts of the Bible then we do of any other ancient work (over 5000). Those ancient works by Homer, we have far far less. Among all those manuscripts, there is less than .01% variance, and this for a document that was completely reproduced by hand.

Well it certainly wouldn't be the talking animals, the people living in whales, the 900 year old men. There is nothing convincing in that book. At least not for adults.

Good question, some of the answers seem to be by people who are clearly not well.Have these morons actually seen some of the insane stuff in the Bible?

Nothing would. It would be like picking up Stephen King's "Night Shift" and reading a collection of very scary stories about destruction of humanity by some vengeful monster.

If I read the entire Bible, I would see that it was true, because from the beginning to the end it has the same theme. The authors of the Bible didn't omit the bad things about themselves, but included those also, so that countless generations may learn from their mistakes. I see the Bible as guidebook to life.

Since my last two questions were about the scripture and whether or not Jesus forgives people of all religions (most of my answers are no)....probably not.
Btw, I'm a believing Christian, but a liberal one.
