My psychiatrist prescribed me with Prosac (20mg) 3 days ago. Today I notice something different about myself. I just DONT THINK.

Im someone who thinks none stop. About the strangers I come across, about the ratty old bicycle by the streets etc...Sometimes my thoughts affects me so much. For once I felt my mind was blank today. I simply cant think or ponder much abt things.

I was just telling someone abt an experience of mine. NEVER in my whole entire life can I ever tel that story without shedding a tear. Yes, I didnt shed a single tear and in fact I told it like a matter-of-fact tone.

Is this the effect of Prosac? I dont understand, it has only been 3 days? I do not know if I like this feeling, sure I dun feel saddened anymore but I almost feel stupid and strange.

I've experienced this although I was taking zyprexa and paxil. You were experiencing what sounds like racing thoughts and the prozac may be slowing those thoughts. And as far as telling the story and not shedding a tear, I noticed that anti-depressants can make you feel numb to things. When my grandma died I didn't cry I didn't feel anything inside. I hated being disconnected from my emotions, when my entire life I had felt them so strongly.
However depression really effects your life. It effects your relationships, your education, your career and your over all satisfaction with your life. Its important to control your symptoms of it, because it can negatively effect all of those things. What I would do is wait for maybe 2-4 weeks, and if that point your not liking the effect of your medication I would speak with your doctor and explain what is going on. Ask if you could try another medication. There are many they could try. Because I am bi-polar I was recently prescribed Seroquel and with that it stabilizes my mood but I still can cry and I still can feel excited with happiness. I like that I'm not disconnected to my emotions. I feel like I have balance. And that's what any person should strive for, in my opinion.

Prozac is very much capable of making you less emotional although most medications take 48hours to have such a pronounced effect. All medications in this category can inhibit your emotional responses drastically and Prozac is one of the main ones for it.

It is fundamentally what the drug is for. By reducing your anxieties it also reduces your capacity for emotion. Hopefully this is something that will wear off in time when you gain more of a tolerance towards it although for me Prozac is very much for me a short term solution.

You may well continue to feel vague and dazed and I would consider talking to your psychiatrist if it continues as it could be the side effects are not worth the benefits. There are alternatives out there so it is possible you could be prescribed one of those.

i also started to take zoloft when i saw my y life falling apart facing husbands infidelity and cheating and emotional blackmailing by my mother. But dear 3 days is too soon to have any effect. I had suicidal ideas and i got rid of it on the first day. i discussed it with my doctor and he said it was just placebo.ie bcz i was feeling helpless before i started the drug and when i started it ,i had a feeling that now things can get better.at least i am in control of my ownself.was able to get enough sleep. Continue the drug for at least two weeks, only then u'll know how it is affecting ur life. I am also having a feeling of numbness towards emotion, but it helped me deal with my mom.Best of luck.

i have been on prozac on and off 4 the past 4 yrs.im about 2 start taking it again.it helps immensely with the racing thoughts but it does take some adjustment they say it takes 4-6 wks 2 work properly.it is a ***** 2 stop and start but once it does its thing its unnoticeable day to day but after time your coping strategies improve and u handle things alot better and it makes it easier 4 u 2 deal with the underlying problems without your overdose of emotions in the way.it is a wonder drug and it saved me alot of discomfort and unnecessary drama.

yeh sounds like an anti depressent.........maybe the experience is what you need to talk about, doctors always seem to just stick people on anti depressents when what they really need is a good chat with a counsellor
also that is quite a large amount to start on but dont stop takin it, give it at least 2 weeks and if you hate the side effects and they are still ther tell your doctor.

yes prozac is to help you cope with everyday life. if you don't like the way it makes you feel you may want the doctor to change you to a new medicine. it can take a little while for the strangeness to wear off. good luck and best wishes.

That is exactly the effects of medication.

Ask your doctor to refer you to a therapist. As you say, you don't want your ability to think hampered. A therapist will help you to understand your problem.
