We must understand that prophecy is not of anyone's partiquilar interpration.
In this case the writer is mentioning G-d who is holy, G-d who is true, and follows up by mentioning a mysterious phraze "the key of David" and goes on to say: he who opens and no one closes and he who closes and no one opens.
This is a hard saying that I can only give an oppinion on but it is strictly my own, [as Paul once said about a certain issue I not the L-rd says] but given the facts and occurenses in the bible we know that King David had a heart that went after the L-rd.
We know that G-d has the power to open the heart of man towards him and we know that he has the power to close it towards him as well, as he did with the pharro of egypt as G-d told Moses at the burning bush [I will harden his heart so that he will not let my people go]. The key is the "understanding" of G-d's pleasure towards us and us towards him.
And by reading the following verses you will agree that G-d has pleasure with the messenger at the church of philadelphia, and says some vital pleasent information regarding this issue as well, so by following the next verses you can come to this basic conclusion, that the key of david is the key to the kingdom.
Ultimately the access to the kingdom is given to us, so in essense the key of David is the key of the kingdom.

Revelation 3:7 as in Revelation 1:2 and 1:8 and 1:12 and 1:18 and 3:1 and in Revelation 3:14, Jesus is telling us who he is and by what authority He has to warn the 7 churches.
In Revelation 3:7 as in 1 Chronoicles 17:3-14, God the Father told Nathan that My Son (Jesus) shall build ME a house to dwell in.
Jesus said, "I am the Way" Jesus (the Word of God) is the Key, He told us the Way, and it was in Matthew 7:15-27, as Jesus told us on His last day on the earth in John 14:21 "Remember whatsoever I HAVE SAID unto you.
Read Isaiah 22:21-25 and then remember what Jesus said in Matthew 7:15-20, apply this teaching.

I think it refers to the Son of Man and the descendant of David who is the bright morning star. Whoever has the Son, will be given the keys to the kingdom of heaven and has the spirit of true prophecy.

The same Lord Jesus has the key to government and authority in and over the churches; he opens a door of utterance to his ministers: he opens a door of entrance, opens the heart. He shuts the door of heaven against the foolish,

This key is also found in Isa. 22:22 Therefore it has to be referring to the key to the kingdom of God, Jesus told Peter upon this rock(Revelation) I will build my hurch, Therefore Jesus gave the keys to the kingdom of salvation to Peter, Because the kingdom of God is within us.
