Our earthly parents sometimes may chasten us, to gratify their passion, rather than to reform our manners. But the Father of our souls never willingly grieves nor afflicts his children. It is always for our profit.
I don't quite get what it means when it says our earthly parents may chasten us to gratify their passions ????
I'm not going to add more comments as I want to see how you "read" it. thanks WEndy

I think since we are human and sinners at that, then maybe sometimes what is important goes by the wayside.I believe in getting the children small, so they are conditioned to the word and actions of god. earthly parents sometimes forget what is really important. i have a small son, and i make sure to start him on a right path now that he is a spnge, iwant him to soak up everything jesus wants him to. i understand though, peoples busy lifestyles and such, but the bottom line is we have free will ,and will do what we feel like doing, dome are pleaseing to god, some not, in the end individually we have to answer for ourselves. sometimes passages get taken out of context and off people go on a tangent.

It means that sometimes children are forced to follow some paths that their parents want, which is a big punishment. To be more specific, parents have frustrations because they could not fulfill some ambitions they once had. So they want to see their dreams come true through the actions of their children. But they forget that maybe children are different persons, with different talents and wishes that do not match those goals. Instead of being selfish, parents should encourage children to cultivate their real skills. If not, potential brilliant achievements could be cancelled and God doesn`t want that.

Okay I may be wrong but the way I see it the meaning is that sometimes our earthly parents may use us for themselves. Such as living their dreams through us or using us to get attention for themselves. Whereas the Father will always stand in the shadows and never judge or use us to gradify hisself in anyway. He is totally unselfish and only wants the best for us. But then that is just what I think....
