Bull Terriers, ie: Staffy Bulls, Pit Bulls; I think we really need to get the word out about how gentle they are and they get such a bad rep. Does anyone have any ideas about letting people know how wonderful they really are.

yes.

Bull Terriers are known as friendly and outgoing dogs, even having a "clownish" attitude about them, though they are not generally ideal for a first-time dog owner. Their physical strength is matched by their intelligence, and both body and mind need to be kept active. They can be fun and playful. As a breed they are generally placid and will not normally make the first move. They are very affectionate dogs that love human company. Bull Terriers are particularly good with children, and usually have a high pain threshold, which reduces the risk of injury from a defensive bite. Younger dogs, however, may regard children as playmates and because of their strength could cause inadvertent injury. They are protective of children in their charge. Bull Terriers make formidable guard dogs while their owners are away.

I tell people every day how much I love my dogs. I bring them everywhere with me...introduce them to people in an attempt to change a mind or two about the breed. I have also been very active in my community in opposition to BSL, writing to my congressmen and drafting petitions.

Saying these dogs are gentle and sweet is only showing one side of the coin; These dogs are also very powerful and can be difficult to train. So I make it a point to show the pro's and con's of Bully ownership. Let's face it...there are bully owners out there who don't have the first clue how to handle their dogs....and bad ownership means more Pit Bulls in the news.

It's not the pitbulls and bull terriers that are the problem, it's the OWNERS that are training them to be so aggressive. Listen, people, if you don't like other people/animals treading on your damn turf, then I suggest you buy a trailer and move to any desert in the world, where you'll be far away from everyone. Pit bulls can be gentle, we as responsible dog owners need to train them to be that way, and not be so rough and abusive towards them.

Unfortunately, until the ignorant jerks out there are stopped from torturing these animals in dog fights, it will be difficult. Until then, the rest of us have to continue to try to get the word out. Educate, educate, educate! That's what it comes down to. Bully breeds are by nature sweet, loving dogs. Raised properly, they are the most loving and loyal companions and at one time (back in the 50's & 60's) were the number one family dog in America.
