there are no definite factors that contribute to ds. some studies have shown that women over 35 are at a higher risk, but it can happen to any woman. ds occurs in 1 out of 800 live births. trisomy 21 is the most common form of ds; it is caused by an extra 21st chromosome and it is seen in all cells of the body. mosaic's ds is a bit different...it too is caused by an extra chromosome however, it is only seen in some cells in the body. edward's syndrome is another one, though not as common and children born with this tend not to live for very long due to complications.
