Not on the PGA Tour. Amateurs cannot win money until they turn pro...

Just because you collect prize money in a tournament does not automatically mean you are a professional. There are amateur tournaments in golf and in other sports that pay out prize money.

I'm guessing you are probably talking about PGA Tour events. In this case, amateurs cannot collect any money, as is the case with most (if not all) professional golf tournaments.

Head to the link I show as a source below. It is the US Golf Association's rules on amateur status. Rule 3 in this section will define the limits for you. The short answer: cash is a no-no, but you can receive a prize or merchandise voucher up to $750 in value (or much more, if the prize is for a hole-in-one).

Actually, yes an amateur can collect prize money, but he or she will then lose the amateur status. There's a limit to what amateur can collect gifts relating to his golf competition as well. I vaguely remember something like if you hit a hole in one and got a Mercedes as prize, you can collect it, but losing your amateur status for a period of time.

Think an amateur can't collect prize money in US but countries adopting R&A ruling can accept prize money of up to US$500.

You are right there where you are trying to break 80...a tough feet. Start to pay closer attention to where you are losing strokes...If you find yourself missing greens and then two putting for a bogie then a iron with more playability maybe what you need to get you into single digit handicap. Just because you don't inspire to play golf to pay bills or to pay for an education I am sure you have admirations of shooting par as most of us recreational golfers do.....Set your golas high and go for it. With a lot of work and some instruction I bet you could be say a 5 handicap by next summer....Just find out where your game is weak and work on it....You may be hitting all of your green in Reg but yet three putt most....for this the AP2's won't help. I read a book that was suggested to me. Golf is not a Game of Perfect.....focuses on the Mental side of Golf...This has helped me more then anything at shaving strokes off your score...GOOD LUCK !!!!!!

If you are playing in an amateur tournament that awards prize money then you can. Some areas have amateur circuit tournaments that award cash prizes.
