Some will depend on your age and whether there is room for him to stay there. Don't assume he will be able to stay in your room!
When I was 19, my mother actually invited my boyfriend from another state to come and stay with us for a few weeks, and even paid for his transportation. The assumption was that he would stay in the guest room, of course. :)

It's proper for you to ask, I don't think it is proper for your mother to say yes, but that is your family business. Don't be coy when asking Mom, just ask, and don't leave out any details like how long he's staying, whether he'll have money for his own food, whether he drinks or uses drugs, etc.

Depends on how old you are. If you are of age your mom would have her head buried in the sand to think you aren't doing anything. Personally if you are of age, I'd let him stay.

depends on your ages. My grandmothers rule was no boys upstairs (where the bedrooms were). My mom just asked that we not have sex in the house (was 23 then).

I am a mom and I don't want my daughter to ask me that. He will have to stay in a hotel or his friend's place. Unless you are engaged to be married, it's best not to ask.

How old are both of you? How far away does he live? Do your parents like him? Do you show responsibility in the things you do (chores, phone, etc)?
Talk to her.
