To give testimony to the life of our Lord, Jesus Christ. His miracles and his teachings, his death on the cross for our sins. His resurrection from the dead and his going back to heaven. Fulfillment of Old Testament prophesy which was fulfilled through the life and death of Christ! Also to declare the good news of God's Kingdom to the generations! It was also a historical document that documented the son of the Most High God who walked among mankind!

Well, I think gospel songs might have been when the slaves wanted to communicate with each other, and since they were not allowed to read, they came up with this kind of communication. It was a releasing of their pain of being slaves, and an inspiration to each other. I think it was the same as the gospels in the bible, it was to commnicate their relationship and stories about Christ.

Gospels were/are written as a testimony to the message or teachings of a religious teacher or master, which becomes something accepted as a guiding principle.

As various accounts and testaments to the fulfilled prophecy of Christs birth, life, death and resurrection. Its called the Gospels because Gospel means 'good news' or "God story" when you study the etimology of the word. Love in Christ, ~J~

About 30 years after the resurrection of Christ, the apostles and their successors saw the success of their endeavors, and also saw some opportunists who began preaching stories of Christ that were not true. With the help of writers and the more literature apostles, Christian leaders decided to commit the story to the written word.

The apostles wanted to preserve the account of what they knew to be the truth about Jesus Christ and his church ... just as the prophets and scribes of old had done with the chosen people and the promise of messiah.

Both were inspired by God to do so, and such work is an important part of the church's sacred Tradition.

They were written to record, the same way a newspaper reporter records eyewitness accounts and verified reports of what happened at the very crisis point of human history, when God visited the human race, and said, " Come unto me, downtrodden of the earth, betrayed by your own instincts and let down by every authority. I will give you the peace and joy you seek. I forgive your sins, and bring the dead back to life.
I lay down my life for you, to bring you back to my sinless heaven." Take, eat, this is my human body, broken for you.
Drink my blood, sacrificed for you, to bring you back to a sinless heaven.
