Well, first you have to be in the Army and be an Infantryman.

Enlisted Soldiers who excel in their Infantry task knowledge and physical fitness can apply to the Ranger Regiment. No guarentee of acceptance and they can be kicked out with a word from their chain of command.

NCO's will have to go to the Ranger Course -- a very, very difficult course that combines grueling physical challenges with tough mental challenges and leadership requirements all in simulated combat environments from the jungles to deserts to mountains.

Officers that want to be assigned to the Ranger Regiment must be at least senior lieutenants with proven leadership ability (already had platoon leader time) and they can apply -- very difficult to be accepted. Then they go to Ranger school prior to assignment with the Regiment.

Male officers of other branches may apply to attend the Ranger School to 'earn the tab' but only a few can be assigned to the actual Ranger Regiment. Those are the ones in direct combat support roles (sapper platoon leader, fire support officer, etc...).

Once in the Ranger Regiment, the Rangers train almost continously. They are very proud of their high physical fitness standards and extensive live-fire training.

A soldier can become a ranger when the higher headquarters issue an order for him to join the rigorous training for rangers.
