I don't know why some people have assumed you're suggesting that doctors shouldn't be paid!
I live in Britain and I have had breast cancer. I received excellent treatment and care for which I paid not one penny. Items I needed such as a prosthetic breast form and a wig were free. Should I choose at any time to have reconstructive surgery, it will be free.
Doctors and all other health workers involved in my treatment received their salaries as usual.
Our National Health Service is far from perfect - creeping privatisation and cuts in services such as cleaning have caused huge problems, and it should receive far more funding. But I'd have it any day over the system in the US, where just from reading questions on here you can see that people get into debt trying to pay for essential life-saving medicines and treatment.
**********EDIT: Aw Samm, you're all heart! Still not broken the old judgemental habit then?

There are gov programs in place to help with this. When I was first diagnosed with aml I had no insurance. Luckily for me though, my income met the requirements for state medicaid (I was 21 working retail). I had to make 5$ copays here and there but.. I am now considered permanatly disabled being that I just went through a stem cell transplant and also am on medicare. Again, a few copays here and there, but no huge expense.
The problem is there is no give in these programs. During my remission i was well enough to work, but still needed to see the doc and have blood work once a month. Which meant I needed to keep the insurance. When I called my case worker to ask about such things like how much money I can make and so forth she got all snotty and acted like I was trying to cheat the system. I finally got to talk to the supervisor, and she looked up my case and did the numbers and as it turned out I couldnt make more than100$ a month to keep the med.
I dont really think cancer or anything else should be treated for free, but I do think the gov like medicaid and medicare should be alil more flexible on the terms to allow more ppl to participate. Maybe a sliding scale of benefits based on your income or whatever.

Do you think a Doctor should be a slave? After studying and working hard for years? It costs thousands of dollars to get thru Med School. He has to work days and nights and weekends and all the holidays. Sundays are just another workday. How do expect him to pay for an office, nurses, insurance, supplies? He has a family, a house, a car, etc. All Doctors are willing to work for free from time to time. But only if they choose to. The government thinks they can get away with cheating the Doctors by cutting their fees on their own. But all that is doing is driving the good Doctors out of Medicine. Then they bring in foreign doctors or fake doctors like P.A.'s. And who knows what kind of training these people have?

I think we should have universal medicine or socilistic as they do in Canada. But to some people that have the money and insurance they seem to be to out vote the minority because they want to pick their own doctors and what hospital they go to . But there are so many ill, poor and children that are not recieving the medical attention they deserve. Sorry this subject makes me angry. I have health insurace and can go to the doctor but I am also a nurse and ethically everyone should recieve the same care no matter what......

I belong to a large group insurance in my country. I pay a contribution each month and it is collected with my provincial taxes.
The strength of the government system that I use is its absolute reliability. I cannot be refused service because a hospital or doctor is in or out of plan. My insurance will never lapse, my visits to my various doctors do not force me to think about the cost. I cannot be refused because of my history. I am treated considerately and regularly. The medical staff are paid by the provincial plan to treat me and others.

I return to you the question: why physicians should be compelled to treat cancer for free?
Well, the government might finance that, you might reply, perhaps. But it just happens that state financed health-care lead to other problems everywhere it works that way, not to say abuse in some instances.

No. Not every country can afford such things. People need to stop getting cured and learn to die like they were made to. This is so annoying, just accept it, you were chosen, the only thing you need to get through it is a little will power.
