I would check it out with a chiropractor. Go see one that takes xrays of your back. You'd be amazed what these guys can do. Most likely you're back just needs an alignment, but there could be damage there that's not repairable. A good chiropractor can tell all this and help alieviate the pain with proper adjustments and with massage therapy, and also using - I forget what they are called, they aren't TENS units but they are similar, it's an electric current sent to the muscles around the area that's bothering you. It's done to release tight muscles.

Anyways they help a lot. My friend did the same thing, and his chiropractor has been helping him a lot (his back was just out of alignment when he moved a certain way).

But before doing more exercises, I would have it checked out by a chiropractor. After that, ask them about doing more excercises, they'll be happy to discuss your gym regiment with you :)

Good luck!

The major feature is the spine. This is a highly complex and delicate structure which is made up of 33 small bones called vertebrae. In between each vertebra is a disc which acts as a shock absorber, and stops the bones rubbing together.
The discs are made up of a jelly like substance, which is protected by a tough, fibrous outer casing. The spine is supported by specialised back muscles, and an array of ligaments, nerves and tendons. The lower - or lumbar - region of the back is particularly prone to injury. This because it bears the entire weight of the upper body, and is twisted and bent more than other parts. As a result it inevitably suffers more wear and tear. For most cases of back pain the only treatment is pain relief, often through the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin. Physiotherapy, heat therapy, massage and hydrotherapy can help. This is particularly important when performing tasks, such as lifting, that carry an increased risk of injury. Strengthening the back muscles, keeping fit by taking regular exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight can all help to minimise the risk of back pain.

If the only issue is low back pain, without other symptoms, such as lower limb numbness or pain, or fever, you can try working out, but start with a balance ball. Just sitting on the ball will help strengthen the core muscle and low back muscle to support the spine. An instruction DVD or booklet should come with the therapy ball.

Also as long as you are otherwise healthy, try seeing a chiropractor first. With manipulation (I prefer activator technique) and treatment modalities you may find relief. If not proceed to physical therapy, for more effective training and modalities.

If the pain increases or changes and other symptoms occur, you will need to see a neurosurgeon or orthopedic surgeon specializing in spines for further evaluation and possible treatment.

Do not start weight training or intense exercise if you have pain, until seen by the chiropractor or surgeon. They can more effectively guide your rehabilitation.

Good luck.

Go to a sports physio who can show you some good exercies to help ease the pain and hopefully cure it.
