Sleeping with a pain condition is one of the most difficult medical issues. People often wait until they are exhausted before falling to sleep. This actually leads to greater perception of pain during the daytime due to not achieving restful sleep, thus increasing the body's stress and decreased ability to heal and control pain.
If possible adjust the timing of your pain medication to one hour prior to your preferred time for sleep. For most pain medications this will put the medication at it's peak effective level at the right time. Also a heating pad during this last hour will increase the circulation to the affected area and sooth the pain.
If you are still having trouble initiating sleep contact your health care provider and discuss the issue with them. They should be able to precribe a short course of a short acting sleep medication to help you until the pain can be controlled.
Otherwise try taking melatonin, available at nutrition supplement stores, like GNC. Start with 5 mg 15-30 minutes before you are ready to sleep. If you are not asleep in 15 minutes of rest, take 2 mg every 30 minutes to a maximum of 30 mg per night.
I hope this helps.

You might need to switch to a different pain medication. For me, certain pain medications make me feel like I'm going to bounce off the walls, so I don't get any sleep and then I feel like I don't get relief because I'm exhausted. Talk to your doctor - you may need to adjust the type of medication or the dosage during the day. You may need to take more at night and less during the day, or just take a different pain med throughout the day and night. Once I had a medication that worked great during the day and I had to take a different pain med at night - so I took two different medications, one during the day, one at night, it's not unheard of. It's best to talk with your doctor though and find the right treatment for you :)
I hope your shoulder feels better!

What kind of pain med are you taking and how long before bed do you take it. This can make a difference on how well the med will work . And you are going to still have dicomfort even with pain meds and if you sleep on the side u hurt your shoulder on. You never know how much u might move around at night and do you have your arm in a sling?

Pain is relitive so if you wory about it you will not sleep. If you can learn to relax then you will sleep. The body will turn off the pain if you give it a chance. Thirty minutes awke thinking about the pain seems like hours. Relax and think of something else and you will sleep.
I know this to be true because I have had times of real pain and had to teach myself how to adjust for it. You do not feel pain when asleep so allow your body to go to sleep.

I have a tear in my rotator cuff and they are usually caused by repetitive movements. Burning is how I describe the pain as well. It comes and goes depending on how much I use my shoulder. You may have other issues (IE pinched nerve), its hard to tell. Sounds like a trip to the doc is in order.
