Coughing spells with breathlessness and gasping for breaths is due to chronic bronchitis.
Chronic bronchitis is an inflammation of the main airways in the lungs that continues for a long period or keeps coming back
Causes and incidence:
Cigarette smoking is the main cause of chronic bronchitis. The more a person smokes, the more likely it becomes that the person will get bronchitis and that the bronchitis will be severe.
Secondhand smoke may also cause chronic bronchitis. Air pollution, infection, and allergies make chronic bronchitis worse.
Chronic bronchitis is one form of chronic obstructive pulmonary (lung) disease. Chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma as a group are a leading cause of death in the United States
Symptoms
Cough that produces mucus (sputum), which may be blood streaked
Shortness of breath aggravated by exertion or mild activity
Frequent respiratory infections that worsen symptoms
Wheezing
Fatigue
Ankle, foot, and leg swelling that affects both sides
Headaches
There is no cure for chronic bronchitis. The goal of treatment is to relieve symptoms and prevent complications. It is crucial to quit smoking to prevent chronic bronchitis from getting worse. Any other respiratory irritants should be avoided.
Inhaled medications that dilate (widen) the airways and decrease inflammation may help reduce symptoms such as wheezing.
Antibiotics may be prescribed for infections as needed.
Corticosteroids may occasionally be used during flare-ups of wheezing or in people with severe bronchitis that does not respond to other treatments.
Physical exercise programs, breathing exercises, and patient education programs are all part of the overall treatment plan. Oxygen therapy may be needed in severe cases. In very severe cases, a lung transplant may be recommended
Complications
Acute bronchitis
Pneumonia
Cor pulmonale
Emphysema
Respiratory failure
Cardiac arrhythmia

Were you throwing up the white foam when you last saw your doctor? Bronchitis can cause some awful coughing, and the coughing can cause you to gag. The white foam throws me though. Any time you have a change in symptoms, you need to at least call the doctor's office to report the change. You may need to be seen again. Bronchitis can take weeks to recover from fully, but the cortisone and inhalers should help you to see some improvement. Sometimes the inhalers can actually cause more coughing, but they are not typically making your condition worse when this occurs. You can also opt for a second opinion from another doctor.

I once suffered from Chronic Bronchitis. I would suffer sometimes 3 to 4 times per year! Usually when there was a major change in the pressure outside (I live in the north, and the temperature spikes and dips do wonders to chronic sufferers of bronchitis!). Each time I would get horrible hacking coughs, hoarking up green phlegm..it was so frustrating!
The key to getting rid of your bronchitis is to find a way to completely eliminate the germs that are causing all the phlegm and irritation leading to your hoarking cough and heavy breathing. Keep reading to learn how to do kill these germs!!
This page it will change your life and make you feel 100% better within just 24 hours!

It is probably an episode of asthmatic bronchitus. When you're on the verge of pneumonia, you will get the dry, hacking coughs that produce white foam. Unfortunately, it could take up to a month or more to completely get over this. My oldest child had this a lot when he was smaller. He was finally given a cough syrup with something in it to help him sleep and relax him. Hope you feel better soon.

Well, i do believe that it makes no sense to mention "hell" in such a lot circumstances..AND ALL people Americans don't do it. Its very generalizing. I am American and we aren't ALL approximately John Wayne. That was once many years in the past and now not on this new release. We don't all trip horses and shoot bow and arrow. That is an ancient stereo kind of Americans. Its variety of claiming all Brits have unhealthy enamel..NOT all Brits have unhealthy enamel.. I believe a small populace does..however now not ALL.

Whooping cough? It lasts for a month or so. No good treatment. Cortisone could be a bad idea for that.
Allergy? dust, cat, mold, etc. Usually get wheezing, sneezing, antihistamines can help.

Sounds like asthma or bronchitis. Could have developed into pneumonia. I'd be asking for further tests for asthma, and also asking for xrays to check for pneumonia. Breathing is important, you need to get it checked, and fixed!

Have they done any allergy testing or X-rays to see if it might be something more because the meds and inhalers should help.
