Active is probably the best way to go. There are a lot more choices (manufacturers) to choose from out there. You can get passive units but then you'd have to get a hellofa ( dedicated ) amp to run it. If you did go passive, PARTSEXPRESS.COM has a really nice subwoofer amp by Dayton Audio that has all the bells and whistles you could possibly want.- HSU Research.com has some incredible powered subs. Remember, get the biggest most powerful unit you can afford- it will save you money in the long run as we home theater afficionados are always upgrading and improving our systems for that more "oomph" and "slam". Good luck and happy listening!

Hi Jack. It all depends what you want from a Subwoofer. If you want the low frequency effects from movies at realistic volume levels then a powered Subwoofer would probably be the best. If you are satisfied with the low notes not being excessively loud then a passive Sub. would be satisfactory particularly if you listen to music as well. The passive Sub. is better for music. Most rooms are too small for Subwoofers anyway and you don't hear them anything like you do at the Cinema. If you have a pair of high quality ,full range Speakers that go down to say 40 HZ,that is low enough. (that is all you would hear in an average room with a separate Sub.). You will still get good bass "wallop' and "slam' if you are using a high quality amplifier.

Active all the way!
An active sub has much greater depth, slam and controllabilty than a passive one. Passive subs simply 'parasitise' off the main speakers and as a result, they sound fluffy and indistinct.
None of the decent, well known sub manufacturers (REL, Tannoy, Paradigm, Kef, etc.) make passive subs - they are all active.

Normally that depends on the application, but since you mentioned a HTIB in your other questions I would say to look at only active setups.
But you will see passive subs in higher end applications.
