I bought a car from a local dealer. As usual he took copies of my DL etc. Few months later I met this wonderful person and we dated. For some crazy reason her ex-boyfriend got all worked up and wanted to knock me out. That i can live with. But he could not find where I lived but he came to know I bought a car from this dealer who happens to be his friend! One day he stops my girlfriend and shows her his information gathering skills with copies of my DL and other docs that he told her he got from the dealer friend. I am kind of shocked. Isn't that illegal?? Does anyone know what legal rights I have against the dealer? And this freako ex-boyfriend?

No.... they should not have given your private information, especially photo copies of your Drivers License to any private citizen.

To correct the guy above, do not call the police... they won't help you. This is NOT a criminal offense, but you have a good civil suit.

What you do is contact a private attorney, and file a law suit against the dealership for releasing your private information and putting you at risk for Identity Theft and for violating your privacy.

That is your only recourse.

I this person was using your address and other information from the dealership and his "friend" to use to find and harass you, then yea, call a lawyer and see what he says. I used to sell cars and I made copies like that everyday, it's for credit and insurance purposes ONLY. So we cant get in trouble for selling a car to someone with no Lic. and Insurance etc... It is certainly not to track you down. I think you have a lawsuit on your hands. So before you see a lawyer, have a witness ready to go with you and any other proof that he used your information this way. Last but not least, dont tell the guy your going to a lawyer, dont say anything to him until you can build a case against him.
