We used to give our little dog leftover stew, because she was so funny with it. She would take each piece out of the bowl, and put it on the floor next to the bowl, first the meat in a pile, and then the potato, and then the carrot, and then the celery. And then she would eat them in that order, so if she left anything, it was the last of carrot or celery..
But, she doesn't do that anymore, and we have to watch her weight as she is getting old.

We feed our dogs some human food as well as commercial and home made dog food, but we have two rules when we do it.
First they don't get fed from the table even if they are getting human food. We either put it into their bowls when we have finished, or they get fed by hand if it is not too messy to do so and that involves rule number two.
The other rule we follow is NILIF (or nothing in life is for free). To get the reward the dogs have to do something simple like bark on command, do a spin, or any of the other training tasks that they enjoy doing. They are used to rules around meal times because they have to sit for breakfast and dinner, and the bowls are put on the floor and they have to leave them until they are given a release command - usually when we can no longer stand watching all the drool.
At meal times the dogs are allowed near the family, but they have been trained to settle a certain distance from the table. This has been a good all round solution because the dogs value the human space and don't beg from the table, but we still get to give them treats as well.

Never anything other than top quality dog treats and chews. I am so against table food, don't even want to get started on that. Always use the highest quality food you can afford, breed and age appropriate of course. Mine are heavy chewers, so I use the bully sticks as often as I can, and use very small training treats for rewards. They are the happiest and healthiest dogs you could possibly imagine!

Our dogs, with the vet's blessings, eats just what we do. Cooked meat (beef, chicken, pork) mixed with rice and some vegetables green stuff like green beans, spinach, carrots, asparagus, (but not so much with potatoes, no chocolate, no grapes or raisins). They love peanut butter as a treat (we used to get them little peanut butter dog cookies) and even a little ice cream. An occasional bone from beef or ham, with some meat still attached. Treats like chewy rawhide, pig ears, milk bones biscuits, beef jerky, and they used to love the chicken jerky, but we found out the chinese are trying to poison our pets with the food and treats so no longer buy those from Wal-Mart. We used to be able to trust Purina dog chows, especially puppy chow, but not so sure any more if they import ingredients - it used to be all american product. We feel safer giving them the same stuff we cook and eat. They don't beg, because we feed them when we eat in their own dishes on the floor. However, one of them will sit up pretty for his treats.

I try not to feed my dog anything off of a plate or human food out of the hand. I am not wanting him to beg and not wanting him to have much food other than dog food but he is a beagle/basset and his nose is getting better so he follows the food. He does get dropping every once in a while if he finds them and frozen carrots for teething.

We had 2 dogs and both of them loved our leftovers. (Nothing spicy or with bones in, though.) Particular favourites were pasta dishes and rice pudding whereas they weren't too partial to carrots in a shepherd's pie. They managed to spit them out intact and eat the rest. We gave them human food as an extra, though; their basic diet was dog food. We also made sure we put things in their bowls instead of giving them scraps from the table so they didn't beg too much but they did watch our every move like a pair of hawks!

No, our dogs don't beg as they are trained to go lay down in their crates while we're eating where a chew toy or a stuffed Kong is waiting. They also don't get any people food unless you count a little canned chicken and a few green beans with their kibble.

Our dog eats dog food, treats, leftovers...whatever she can get. we do not give her chicken bones...ever. she eats rib bones, steak bones (like t-bone) she was a country pup b4 we got her, she was like 2 months old and she had already killed a rabbit...so while she is now a city dog...she will kill squirrels and birds and such...it is her instinct, she's really very gentle...you can take the food right out of her mouth, even her kills. she is the best dog ever. she warns us of strangers, protects us that way and even the neighbors...(they give her treats too) you can't get close to our house (or the neighbors) without us knowing. she's just alarming, not vicious...she might attack if we were in danger but luckily we have never had to find that out. she has mellowed with age, she is almost 10 yrs old. we will miss her when she is gone. she is a mixed breed, australian shepard and rott. it was a good mix for us. but I do have to give props to my husband for training her, he worked with her everyday and he is the master in that relationship. but she is courteous of others as well. everyone loves Maddie. she is known in the neighborhood, and liked by all.

My Dad likes to give our pup little bites of human food, including chocolate...I really get on his case about it, because she's starting to get fussy about her regular food and the chocolate could make her really sick. I don't know how I can make him stop, just the thought of something bad happening to my dog makes me feel sick (we lost our last dog to nose cancer, which wasn't anybody's fault,) so I continue to continue trying to lay down the law!

My Danes have never seen a piece of kibble or eaten so called dog treats. We feed raw meaty bones and organs from a variety of animals and I would never make them eat such garbage as commercial dog foods and treats full of chemicals and unknown crap.
