Many Arab sources confirm the fact that the Holy Land was Jewish by population and culture in spite of the Diaspora:
In the the year 985, the Arab writer Muqaddasi complained that in Jerusalem the large majority of the population were Jewish, and said that "the mosque is empty of worshippers..." .
Ibn Khaldun, one of the most creditable Arab historians, wrote in the year 1377:
"Jewish sovereignty in the Land of Israel extended over 1400 years... It was the Jews who implanted the culture and customs of the permanent settlement".
After 300 years of Arab rule in the Holy Land, Ibn Khaldun attested that Jewish culture and traditions were still dominant. By that time there was still no evidence of "Palestinian" roots or culture .
The historian James Parker wrote: "During the first century after the Arab conquest [670-740], the caliph and governors of Syria and the [Holy] Land ruled entirely over Christian and Jewish subjects. Apart from the Bedouin in the earliest days, the only Arabs west of the Jordan were the garrisons".
Even though the Arabs ruled the Land from 640 to 1099, they never became the majority of the population. Most of the inhabitants were Christians (Assyrian and Armenian) and Jews.

I'd say give JOe P the best answer....
Also B's link is great......i do have issues with it being semi biased...although alll true. Things were left out though.
There were actually some issues between jews and muslims back in teh day of Muhammad (PBUH).....but it wasn't religious. It was more political.. Jews broke a treaty....and like i said..it wasn't their religion that did anything...it was the actual people that inhabited the city.
There were also some other things here and there......"religion" might have been the reason, but no actual religious warrant for the action. I think one jewish site was desecrated by the "muslims" in Jerusalem couple hundred years ago. The following ruler though paid to rebuild it. I mean...there wasn't something in islam that said to destroy this jewish property........but it was probably destroyed because it was jewish.
Muslims basically believe that judaism turned into islam. God throughout history destroyed the people that went away from the religion.....pretty much when jesus came along....the good jews followed him, but a lot didn't. God didn't destroy the jews, so the "good Jews" needed to differentiate themselves.....it was called christianity.......then eventually the majority of christians stopped following the right religion and although islam was introduced to the pagans.....it was suppose to be the same jewish religion that became Christianity...that is now islam.
Thats their claim to palestine and jerusalem too. God gave the land to the jews, but not an ethnicity, but "his religion". Muslims know Moses practiced Judaism, but say he is a muslim...abraham was a muslim......etc.
Some things were changed in the religion, that were superficial...just to differentiate.....For instance, jews look up into the sky when they pray.....muslims don't just because jews do. Muslims also think some things wer echanged by man in judaism..b.ut islam and judaism are 70% the same.
I went way off topic, but the first mosque actually faced jerusalem. THe kabba in mecca was controlled by pagans.......muslims believe abraham built it, but do to the idols......they shouldn't pray towards it and jerusalem was the holy city. After the idols were cleared out, thats when they swtiched to praying toward mecca.

The Islamic claim to Jerusalem is false - There were no mosques in Jerusalem in 632 at the death of Muhammad. Jerusalem was [then] a Christian-occupied city
There is no reference to any Palestinian people in the Qur'an, although Muslims claim that their prophet was once in Jerusalem (an event that is not mentioned in the Qur'an either). It appears evident that Muhammad did not meet any Palestinian in his whole life, nor did his successors either.
Caliph Salahuddin al-Ayyub (Saladin), knew the Jews and kindly invited them to settle in Jerusalem, that he recognized as their Homeland, but he did not know any Palestinian. To claim that Palestinians are the original people of Eretz Yisrael is not only against secular history but also against Islamic history!
There has never been a land known as Palestine governed by Palestinians. Palestinians are Arabs. The name "Falastin" that Arabs today use for "Palestine" is not an Arabic name, but adopted and adapted from the Latin Palestina. How can an Arab people have a western name instead of one in their own language? Because the use of the term "Palestinian" for an Arab group is only a modern political creation without any historic or ethnic grounds, and did not indicate any people before 1967. An Arab writer and journalist declared: indistinguishable from Jordanians (another recent invention), Syrians, Iraqis, etc. Keep in mind that the Arabs control 99.9 percent of the Middle East lands. Israel represents one-tenth of one percent of the landmass. But that's too much for the Arabs. They want it all. And that is ultimately what the fighting in Israel is about today... No matter how many land concessions the Israelis make, it will never be enough.
To the answerer who mentioned "Palestine" as the name of the land, that name is a corruption of Philistine, invaders. Today the only place known as Palestine is in the American state of Texas.

Jerusalem has always been crucial to the Jewish state, and Jews have lived in Palestine/Israel for almost four thousand years - continuously.
It used to be called Judea, then the Romans renamed it 'Palestine' as part of their campaign to control the Jewish population.
The original term 'Palestinian' referred to Jews as the land was home primarily to Jews.
The 'Palestinian people' that we know today did not actually start migrating to the area until the Jews transformed it from barren desert into a beautiful and viable place to live.
Prior to 1969 - some two decades AFTER Israel was established - the Palestinians that we see today weren't even called 'Palestinians' and were not a distinct entity from the rest of the Arab population. They come originally from Iraq, Egypt, Syria; the countries close to Israel.
Jews have always talked of Jerusalem and we pray facing Jerusalem.
Muslims pray facing Mecca, and in the Quran Jerusalem is not mentioned even once.
All of this said, both Israelis and Palestinians MUST have their own state. It doesn't help to focus on the conflict, we must find a way to move forward.

Jews come from Yitzchak and Muslims from Ishmael. It is ordained there will never be peace between Jews and Muslims.
Everyone wanted Jerusalem. It is the holiest city in Judaism and a holy city in Christianity but Muslims think they have the only rights to Jerusalem.
Also the Koran seems think the slaughter of "infidels" is ok and Jews are certainly seen as infidels by Muslims.

Thee is no ancient history of any fighting between Jews and Muslims. In antiquity there has never been a Jewish "state" except very briefly during Roman times for about 70 years. The area now occupied by Israel has always been know as Palestine. The only fight for Jerusalem in antiquity is that between the crusaders and he Arabs. The troubles begin in 1948 when Israel comes into being n Palestine. The trouble is between Palestinians and Israelis. Not Muslims and Jews. And just for the record Palestinians are not 100% muslims. There are a lot of Palestinian Christians who also opose the state of israel. By no strech of the imagination one can claim an ancient fight between Muslims and jews over Jerusalem. Islam is born in the 7th century ACE.

Muslims built the Dome of the Rock in 658 ad, beheaded the Jewish leader in Jersualem, forcefully took over the temple mount and have had their dome there for the last 1349 years.
Stainlesss Steel is quite abit off on his history. Never heard of David and Solomon and the kings of Israel. So what do you mean there has neverbeen a Jewish state? The truth is, there has never been a Palestinian state. The word "palestine" was forced on the area by the Romans in 135 ad after the Bar Kobah rebellion. The entire land of Israel has been "occupied territory" since the babylonians conquored it in 586 bc. There has not been an independent state in that area up until 1948.

The ancient history told us that jews were brought by Moses prophet with his brother Harun from Egypt to Palestine (Yerussalem) and they made a temple for crying on each Saturday. When Rome kingdom ruled Yerussalem they built the big church there and then when muslim ruled the Yerussalem they built a big Aqsha mosque. So Yerussalem become the sacred city of 3 religions. It was internationalized so every religion followers can go freely there. Before the World War(WW) second jews spread out in so many coun tries so they have no their own country because they were cursed by Allah
.They did not accept prophets appointed by Allah for them
.They killed most all prophets given to them. After WWsecond
they were supported by USA,UK and other allies collected Jews in Palestine as their country by ousting other race and other religion followers such as muslim and christian arabs
.So since that time muslim arabs live in the neighbours countries such asJordan,Libanon and Syria and also to other middle east countries as immigrants.Palestinians claimed that they have the right for Palestine as their own country. So they fighted the israelis supported by other islamic countries.Isrealis supported by USA made war with their neighbour countries such asJordania,Syria,Lebanon
and Egypt.Because they were supported by USA they won the war and they seized part of the neighbour countries land of Jordania,Lebanon and Egypt..Then they made a truce with palestinians and they gave part of their land to Palestine
at the era of Arafat as their leader..

OK, here's how this works. Be ready for a fairly long explanation, but quite possibly the best and most indepth...
Abraham was a shepard in the middle east and one day is called by God to make a new nation of people who worship only one God, El. If he does this God promises him and his people the land of Canaan. There are people living there though, called the Canaanite (and also the Philistines and others) who are pagans. Wars are fought the Hebrew people get their land, you know the story I'm sure. Moses wanders the desert for 40 years and dies before entering the Land of Milk and Honey (Israel). Jashua, Samuel, Esther and others fight several wars againt the inhabitants of the promised land. The people they fight the hardest against are the Philistines.
Anyway after long hard fighting the land becomes the Kingdom of Israel, and gets a King named Saul, then David ights him to become king then Solomon, eventually the Kingdom is split between north and south. Foreign influence and pagan worship split the nation and foreign invasions from the Babylonians neo-Babylonians and Assyrians, and the Greeks (through Alexander the Great) invade and people fight for the land eventually the Romans invade. There is an occupation and a large insurgency lead by the Jews. The Romans rename the land Palestine as an affront to the Jews naming it after the Philistines. Anyway, eventually the nation is disbanded, the Jews are scattered throughout the Earth. Many go to Europe. While the Jews are away and scattered throughout Europe and the rest of the Mid East with no homeland this merchant from Saudi Arabia claims to hear God's words through the Angel Gabriel and writes the Qu 'ran. Wars are fought and the religion spreads throughout the middle east. The Religion spreads even as far as Spain and Hungary through the Ottoman Empire. Anyway, Islam, this new religion is now HEAVLY entrenched in Palestine (which eventually becomes on of the Ottoman Empire's territories) though there were Jews and Christians there they lived in relative peace.
Palestine was under the control of the Ottoman empire which ran all countries from Turkey as it's central head quarters. All is good for several hundred years until the OE joins the Axis powers in WWI they lose. With that they lost all of their territories including Palestine. Now The Middle Est was under control of England and France who split up the region in what is known as the Sykes Picot agreement into today's modern middle eastern states, Syria, Iraq, Kuwait etc. (This carving up of these new states with no regard for tribal rivalries and ethnic tensions is what has made the Mid East the tinderbox it is today, thanks UK and France)
Well during WWII and the Holocaust Jews had nowhere to go, many had been expelled from Poland by the Nazis their homeland destroyed, others were banished from Russia, others lost it all in Germany, and so on. SO they appealed to the English who were in control of Palestine and had it as a pseudo-colony and many immigrated there. They asked the English to give them their own Jewish state, they refused and so terrorist groups were formed like the Irgun and Stern Gang. The English military and overall government was terrorized. World opinion and pressure from people who said England was a colonizing country lead the UK to grant Israel its own nation in 1948. Well this pisses the Palestinian Muslims off. Jews are given a state and territory were many of their own holy sites are. The PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization) is formed, a quasi-guerrilla/terrorist group that tries to unite all Arab nations in a pan-Arab coalition to expel the Jews. They try terror tactics like car and bus bombs, they even fight wars like the 6 day war and the Yom Kippur war where Egypt, Syria, and a number of other nations try to destroy Israel but can't.
In conclusion, the middle east has been a hot bed of territorial fighting and entho/religious rivalries since ancient times. The other poster who said that the Muslim/Jewish fighting has been going on for thousands of years knows little of the history as Islam is less than 1400 years old. Jews were fighting Canaanite, Assyrians, Philistines, Egyptians and others for thousands of years, yes, but they were NOT Muslims then, they were pagans. The dynamic problem between Jews and Muslims today are fairly recent.
And that's pretty much it.
To the guy who said that there was never a Jewish State, well, you obviously need to brush up on history and Biblical studies. Most people here have very bad history. There are very few holes in my explanation I did leave out some history in the interest of time and space, and because it did not pertain to the question.
One person had a good point though. Palistine is mainly populated by Syrians, Egyptians and others today. Yaser Arafat himself was Egyptian though he denied it. Lastly, the constant claim that the fight began between Ishmael and Isaac, is wrong. Both these brothers were both Jews. Muslims did not exist and would not exist for several thousand years to come. I would estimate that the fight between Muslims and Jews has been going on for a little more or less than a thousand years and any attempt to trace it back further is stupid as Muslims were just not around yet.

Jerusalem is a historically important city to both religions. To the Jews because it is THE holy city, where God had his Temple built and to the Muslims because it is from Jerusalem where it is said Muhammed ascended into heaven and is Islam's third most holiest city. That's the basics.
