Gnostic came from the Greek and meant "to know". When "a" precedes something it establishes a negative, hence "not to know" or "don't know" (i.e. whether or not there is a God, let alone a personal one)

Hence atheist means "no God" because the Greek word for God was theos, hence atheos means no-God.

Gnostic = To know
Agnostic = Not to know
Theist = God
Atheist = No God

Somewhat true. We may or may not believe in "God". For most of us, we are unsure. For most, we have trouble believing that there is a supreme supernatural being that blinked us into existence, while also having trouble believing that we evolved from nothing, with no thought behind it. I personally believe in a spiritual world, but most definitely not the god of Abraham, most definitely not Jesus as the Christ and savior, most definitely not any religion that holds belief up as being more important than human beings. There are many different types of belief systems that could be categorized as agnostic. To summarize the most basic principal: Maybe.

Agnostic comes from the Greek "agnosto" meaning unknown. So the agnostics do not claim to have any knowledge of god.

Agnostics are not sure of the existence of god, or they believe that it isn't possible to know of the existence of god.

not exactly.

an agnostic does not know or claim to know if there is a God, or anything about the characteristics of God.

the agnostic also does not claim to know what god wants of them.
