MTV was an anti-establishment force back in the early 1980's .
Now it is the establishment, and that is why it is resented.
Thus you see the "rub".

I actually agree. I was just staring at the tv wondering if anythign exciting was gonna happen but it was just the same stuff. The Democratic debate was more exciting than this which is sad to say cuz I actually watched it and was more entertained. I think MTV needs to rethink and redo for next year because people are just gonna stop watching. Britney did not need to be there it just was a horrible mistake on her part she was not ready to be there, she didn't even know the words to her own song.

Have MTV lost it's edge, HELL YEAH!! All MTV is about is reality shows, that ironically appear to be staged. Why they even bother to have a video music awards show puzzles me because they hardly ever show music videos. I have to say I thought last year's VMA's sucked but this years really blowed it definitely takes the prize. I've lost all hope for MTV it's done.

I thought that MTV has steadily been declining since the early 1990s but during the past several years was when it got horrible, even VH1 sucks nowadays compared to what it was in the 1980s/1990s, sadly even VH1 Classic is starting to suck compared to what they used to be several years ago, I actually thought VH1 Classic was a great channel in around 2002-04 but it's nowhere near as great as it was in those years.

Heck YES MTV is not what it once was . . it's not even about Music Videos anymore. It was good in it's heyday but it is pretty much dead and even sister station VH1 sucks as well. MTV 2 is slightly better in that they play more music but if anything proves it is dead was the Brittney Spears opening act, it was beyond lame, it was painful, she has become such a hasbeen and a perfect reflection of MTV.
It's Sad.

MTV is nowhere near what it used to be. I feel like now it's just a bunch of "reality" shows and there's not much music stuff anymore. I still watch it every now and then when I'm bored though.

Totally agree with you there. I shouldn't have to get up at 6 am just to watch actual "music videos". As far as TRL? They may as well not show the videos at all....I dont care about peoples shout-outs and then they cut half the video out. And VH-1 and BET are going the same way, just slower.

I haven't watched MTV in years due to the fact that it's not all videos anymore. I like them, I don't like all these dating shows and crap.

MTV never had "edge".
C'mon, it's commercialized music industry advertising and lowest common denominator "pop-culture" drama. Always has been, always will be.
There isn't any "edge" there. Unless by "edge" you mean "rich, white men getting paid for exploiting the popular tastes of today's youth."
