Not a firearm however this is a state issue in the US, it is considered a weapon anyway. In most states you can only hunt within certain weeks using a crossbow and likewise in many states you can not discharge a crossbow within a certain distance of homes due to the distance a stray bolt can go.

Depends what you want to do - it is best to check with the local cops. Even target practice has restrictions in some states.

No... It is concidered in the archery department. A firearm is defined as " Anything that can deploy an object with the utilisation of a gasious explosion". In other words shooting a bullet out of a barrel with the aid of gunpowder. They are now starting to class Pellet/BB guns in the classification since they now have developed Pellet/BB rifles that can fire at 1000 feet per second +. All be it a crossbow is certainly leathal it isnt in the "firearm" classification.

In actual application: based on the fact that a x-bow releases a bolt of from 17-22" long under the power of the two limbs attached at the front of the bbl with a heavy string that is placed under stress when ****** to the trigger mechinism; and released when the trigger is pulled. There is no powder or primer to detonate, hense no FIRE......AS IN FIREARM. Now we get to what some liberal group of individuals, generally politicians; may decide to call a firearm, thereby allowing them to write and pass legistration calling the x-bow a firearm and putting it on either a restricted or outlawed list, depending on just what their intentions really are. Simply look in about any firearm/archery catalog and you will find a list of cities, towns, and states to which certain products cannot be shipped; x-bows being high on the list.

in my state & most others a crossbow cannot be used during bow season for deer or turkey but can only be used during firearms or muzzle loader season with a firearms deer tag.
special primitive weapons hunts vary from 1 area to another & may have different rules for each area.

not in and of itself. you can buy them freely over the internet without a permit or minimum age etc.

they *are* included with firearms in a general "weapons" category when judging the breaking of laws, however. if it's illegal to shoot a rifle into a person's house or car etc in your state (in all states), it's just as illegal to shoot a crossbow into them. if your state or city outlaws the shooting of firearms in your neighborhood, crossbows are included, too. holding up a bank with one will get you the same sentence as a firearm inmost states. carrying one through a national forest etc is the same as being caught with a rifle. shooting a person with one is the same "assault with the intent to kill" as a pistol etc.

as long as you're using it legally, it's considered to be general sporting equipment the same as a fishing rod or a basketball. if you use it illegally, though, it's a weapon.

No firearms propel bullets by gunpowder . Bows are NOT firearms, but they are weapons.

NO...It's not ...Certainly not anywhere here in the U.S.A, legally or otherwise..

* As 41 Magnum man pointed out..That's why guns are called "FIRE"arms........A proper analogy of the term. *A "rock " in your back yard could be considered a "weapon" if thrown at a person, vehicle or a house as well
