Feeding a cat a healthy diet is of the utmost importance for the good health of every cat.
Many people feel that dry is the best way to go. Vets feel it is the way to go. Why? Vets are taught very little about nutrition and they are taught what they know by the Pet Food Companies. The companies push dry as it is the very cheapest food in the world to make as they use fillers, vegetable protein and things that cats do not eat in normal life like veggies and fruits. Of course the veggies and fruits are NOT good for human consumption and thus they get it free or for pennies so the big suppliers can get rid of it.
Dry does not keep teeth clean. A cats jaw is made to grab, tear and shred. They have no chewing action. When a cat barfs he throws up the chunks of food. Sometimes the dry shatters but that doesn't rub on the teeth either. A vet told me that she had an elderly cat around 20 who had had wet food her whole life and never had a problem with her teeth, but she had a 7 month old kitten who had to have every tooth pulled since they were so bad he was sick.
Dry food causes diabetes, UTI's, Kidney problems and the list is to long to continue.
The proper food is a diet for an obligate carnivore. Remember you have never seen a lion chasing a biscuit. Your cat needs wet food of good quality. It should be high in protein and under 10% carb. You should not feed your cat fish or seafood more than 1 or 2 meals a week if that much as they become addicted to it and it is high in phosphorous and low in nutritional value.

Here is a chart of most wet foods. The good and the bad. Look for one that is high in protein and low in carbs. Fancy feast is a good middle of the road one, and the cheaper brands but still following the rule are much better than any dry ever could be. Wellness is on the higher end with higher cost. But you have good food.
It is cheaper to feed a cat the wet as they are filled up faster. Think if you are hungry and eat a bag of potato chips you are soon hungry but if you have a nice piece of chicken you are filled up longer. The same for a cat. I began adding small amount of water and mixing it in good for the meals and now add 1/4 cup water to 1/3 cup wet food. It is now like soup. It keeps the food from drying out and Cessan eats when she wants. She is a grazer and I let her be happy. She gained the weight she needed and then the weight gain stopped. If your cat is over weight he will lose weight on a wet diet.
Here is a link explaining very clearly cat nutrition and care. It is excellent and I think every new cat owner should have to read it first.

http://www.geocities.com/jmpeerson/canfood.html pick a high protein low under 10% carb canned food. Fish no more than 1 or two meals a week if you must feed it.
Generally, if your cat seems healthy and active, and is not constantly begging for food, you can assume that he is getting the proper amount of food, especially if the quality of food is superior.

Depends on the cat, and the cans youre feeding with, but the smallers round cans, usually about 2 per day. It has a recommendation on the can. However, my 5 year old cat eats about 1 can along with dry food. Test it out and see, put put about half a can, and then some dry food in another bowl in the morning. And then around dinner time see how much food is gone. It all of it is, you can try feeding a little more. Depends on your cat.

It really depends on the brand and the cat. You can start with the feeding guidelines on the can, and adjust according to your cat's weight and preferences.

I feed Nature's Variety Instincts (venison) and both cats get 1 can per day (6oz).

Poppy would happily eat more but I have to keep an eye on her weight.

The general rule of thumb is that active cats can eat 20-30 calories per day per pound. So if you have an 8 pound cat, he could eat up to 240 calories per day. If you have a 15 pound cat who should weigh 8 pounds, the same is true, although you'd probably go with fewer calories.

How do you know how many calories are in a given can of food since they don't list it? You can contact the mfr, but you shouldn't take their response as gospel. It'll just be a ballpark figure. Or see the link below - it has values for many brands of canned foods.

If you're talking about the 3oz Fancy Feast type cans, 2 cans a day per cat, even up to 3 cans is ok. If you're talking about the 5.5oz tuna fish sized cans, then 1/2 can twice a day per cat. This can also be supplemented with a level 1/4 cup of dry food per day, if you want to add that in, but the 2 small or 1 large can per day, per cat will be sufficient.

I allow mine to eat all the dry food they want. as far as can food they get one 17oz a day or two(several cats)mixed into equal amount of dry.
the dry food helps keep their teeth clean and is cheaper than the can, I go through a 40 lb bag of cat food per week.
often I find a new cat or two eating, and occasionaly other critters eating as well.

I feed my 4 year old cat one can in the morning and one can in the evening.
I offer her dry food and of course water 24 hours a day.
She's really healthy and satisfied.

Hi. My cat has passed on but when he was alive I used to feed my cat some dry cat food with warm milk in the morning for breakfast. For lunch, i used to feed him half a tin of cat food with water and for supper i used to feed him the remainder of the tinned food with water. Always have a bowl of water available. You may want to also have a bowl of dry cat food always available for your cat to nibble on during the day - Ghøst
