Unless he is a hopeless romantic...generally speaking engravings don't hit the heart the same as they do with girls meaning I would wait for the engraving on the wedding rings.
But, if you are dead set...simple is but specialized is best. Example: Use something only you and him share or care about. Possibly reference a trip or event you have shared.
