I am going to fort jackson for basic training at the end of the month. Does anyone know what to really expect?

If you haven't had a medical screening, then you will move from medical station to med station following colored lines on the floor, each station may be on different floors being, where you'll be examined by doctors. An officer will administer your oath, then you'll get on a plane or bus to Basic Training.

When you get to the base you will be met by a DI and taken to orientation. You will be yelled at and intimidated, you may go to the mess hall for a meal, and then you will be fed to the Big Green Machine, where you will all enter with your various civilian clothing and hair styles - y'all will emerge with your work and dress uniforms, equipment, and no hair on your head. While there, you will be inprocessed, your paper work will be completed, you'll be paid, and then you'll march to your new barracks.

There you will be assigned a bed and a locker. At this point you are an idiot. You don't know how to properly make a bed, wear or hang up clothes, how to fold clothing or anything else. You will learn all these skills from scratch. All of your civilian clothes and effects will be packed away and stored. You will take turns at guard duty protecting your barracks from intruders, and there will be intruders!

Besides the physical training (PT), you will take classes in military nomenclature, ranks, military courtesy (saluting), history, and the Code of Miiltary Justice. You will want to go to church on Sunday, regardless of what you believe, they're the only breaks you'll get for several weeks.

You will march almost everywhere. Earlyhin the moring you will wear arm reflectors and carry flashlights. If you smoke then your habit will be used as a reward /punishment. You'll fill out a letter to to be sent home.

Your day will start at 5am. You will make your bed, dress and make sure you are ready for inspection. A runner will be assigned to report to the sergeant's table to inform them that your squad is ready for meals. Of ot's you then he may delay you and have some fun at your expense.

You will be reminded that you volunteered to do all of this.

You'll run the obstacle course, be given rudimentary skills in shooting combat, and eventually your get a day pass to visit the World....

Hon, you will arrive at your duty post most likely after dark and will spend the next couple of hours learning to answer your DI properly Sargent yes Sargent, look at me boy, not at the pussy of the boy in front of you, boy. They begin the processof breaking you down to nothing so that you are soon ripe for the picking to bring you back up again as a man (soldier), you will not sleep that night nor will you sleep the next day, you will be processed into the Army on day 2 and continue to be processed until evening and you then get to eat a meal, yum, yum, yuck!, when you are thoroughly exhausted they will have you draw your uniforms and gear and bedroll and bedding and then proceed to teach you how to properly make your bed, hold on now, not so fast, there is no dropping into the sack just yet, they will teach you how to stow your gear and you will do it and then it is lights out and I mean lights out. Oh, and you likely won't get to use the latrine any time during the first two days, guaranteed. By this time, however, you willhave found no need to because it would be just too traumatizing to even think about falling out and going to the latrine. You'll sleep about two-three hours and then you'll hear the trumpets for the first time or not if you are still dead to the world and you will find out how to wake up in the Army on this your first morning! Sound exhausting? It is! Processing can take up to a week or more before you are assigned to a unit for Basic Training. All the while you are in reception you are on the go 21-22 hours a day. By the end of the week you will have learned to prep your uniforms, polish shoes and boots, roll sock and underwear and set up your giglines in you shirts and how to align every thing properly in your locker and you also have sewn your nametags into your briefs or stamped your name and last four on every article of clothing you have that the military has issued you. On day one of Basic you should be truly GI! Good luck, Hon, you are gonna need it.

Expect to be yelled at alot by the D.S. Expect to do things that don't make sense, like painting the latrine when it doesn't need painting and mopping floors that don't need to be mopped. Expect to run your buns off everyday of the week. Good Luck and remember its just a mind game. After the 7th week the D.S. turn into real human beings. You'll see what I mean.

yeah, jackson is easy. did my basic there in 1999. they will yell at you a lot. they want to "break you down" and then re build you as soldiers. if you have any sense, just realize that they've been trained you yell and make you feel worthless. don't take any of it personally. do what they say and try your best. but it's really pretty freakin easy.
