If so, to what extent? Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Is it idolatry to be so patriotic that it is an integral part of your faith? Or is it just nice to care about your country that gives you religious freedom?

Here is how screwed up things are in the US. First, what they call "Conservative" is actually anti-conservative, both in religion and politics. What the call "Patriotism" is anti-patriotism, and values the polar opposite of all the things that traditionally define American patriotism. What they call "Christianity" represents less than 5% of Christians world-wide. That having been said, there is a distinct link among "Christians," "patriotism," and "conservatives" in this country, following the qualified definitions above.

Religious freedom is the reason why America was founded.

Patriotism started because God told us to honor and pray for our leaders (all of them--Republicans, Democrats, Independents) and our military.

What does idolatry have to do with anything?

...I believe the country may be beginning to understand what the signers of the Declaration were feeling so strongly over 200 yrs ago...it isn't so much a "legal" joining of church and state, but rather a mind-set...a sort of "merging" inside the heart

It is slightly merged but no one literally worships the flag! I don't think patriotism could become part of a faith.

There are some conservative candidates for office that would like you to believe that. But it's possible to be patriotic and not religious.

Here is a quote for you.

“No, I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered as patriots. This is one nation under God.” -George Bush

That scares me.

“A thorough reading and understanding of the Bible is the surest path to atheism” -Donald Morgan
