My friend recently downloaded Microsoft Office with a torrent application. I just don't want him to have a shower daddy in prison.

Of course it is illegal to obtain copyrighted material for "free".
If you don't want your "friend" to meet big bubba, tell him to save for buying his stuff legally or he can always try to use a free/open source alternative.

For example, OpenOffice is quite a real free alternative to the Office suite

It's illegal to share copyrighted documents and music using any protocol (including BitTorrent). It's not illegal to download torrents (unless they are copyrighted).

It's illegal to download copyrighted software without paying for them, which I believe answers your question.

On the other hand, the chances of being caught... Well, that's sorta irrelevant. :)

In short, to use Bittorrent to download files is not illegal.

To use Bittorrent to download pirated copies of software, however, IS illegal.

bittorent software itself is not ILLEGAL
but programs you download from bittorent are ILLEGAL
