It is because of the different cults that have broken away from the Mormon religion ant reside in Midwestern states such as Utah. While I don't agree with the Mormon religion at all, I know that they are not a cult, just another religion.

Because the Mormon church is a cult. That is why. Sure it has somewhat to do with the temples, but it has a lot to do with other things too. Mormonism denies most of the cardinal doctrines of the historical Christian church. The BOM upholds most of the cardinal doctrines of the historical Christian church.
The priesthood that the church claims was restored could not have been "restored" when you look at the book of Hebrews. Let's leave aside the false prophecies of Joseph Smith.
Let's talk about the president of the church standing up in assembly a few years ago and saying that the God the Mormon church worships is not that of the Bible. The president saying something like that is about all it takes to seal the reasons!
A longer version of why is available in a number of places below.
What do you think about the historical Christian church? You would have to say that we are not true Christians in order to be honest with the teachings of the LDS church.

I think there are several reason
1. it's branch off from Christianity that is so different and radical that it's no longer the same religion ( unlike various religious denominations)
2. This branch off only occurred about 170 years ago ( I could be a bit off on my dates) that's relatively recent compared to other "legitimized" religions
3. Your churches' stance of various issues such as polygamy, blacks, and what beverages are appropriate to drink seem to changes based on the church leaders current points of view.
Although I don't know I'd call Mormonism a cult, another reason i have trouble taking it seriously is I've met very few Mormons who have a very good grasp on what they actually are saying they believe when they call themselves Mormon.

In a religion that is suppose to be a blessing, I got so sick and tired of being chased by death and almost dying five times, that I just left to try and get away from this curse, it seemed the God of the mormon church did not care to stop this stupidity. My patriarticle blessing just revealed a sin I was dealing with, like I didn't know that, what a curse that was, not a blessing at all, like both me and the God of the mormon church didn't already know that, dah! How depressing, I knew then I just had to leave and the blessing was nothing more then a psychic reading. And that my dear is my testimony.

People think we are a cult because they don't have enough information on our religion. They believe really strongly in their beliefs. When they see and hear of our beliefs, it comes as a surprise. It's a totally new concept. Alot people aren't accepting us because they have misinformation, they don't know alot, our beliefs are new, and they find our faith in the Lord scary. Plus, you've lived in Utah were there are ALOT of Mormons. I live in the Eastern part of the U.S. and I've been to Utah and it's really different here. All you need to do is have faith and ignore the ignorant comments of non-mormons.

The different between a cult and an accepted religion boils down to a few hundred years.. Mormonism hasn't been around for the number of years required to take it from cult status to religion status in the collective societal mind..

I like Mormons and think they are good people but the religion does go way off track from other Christian churches. Because of the "way off" part makes it fit the description of cult to me. Sorry, I wish it wasn't so.

By definition, anything outside mainstream religion is dubbed a cult. Mormonism is definitely not mainstream Christianity. Jesus said Himself that all prophecy has been fulfilled and that the Holy Bible is God's only Word. That sort of puts Mormonism under the spotlight.

Counterfeit Christianity is probably the best description I can give for a cult. Counterfeit Christianity is an imitation of real Christianity. Bible terms like "Jesus Christ, Resurrection, Salvation, and Atonement" are used by the Cult, but the various cult groups have assigned entirely different meanings to these terms.
Like counterfeit money which is sometimes difficult to detect, so it is difficult to detect counterfeit Christianity, since it looks like the real thing. Experts examining counterfeit money often hold it up to a strong light and look for identifying marks. Counterfeit Christianity also has identifying marks, which can be seen when, held up to an even stronger light, the light of God's word, the bible.
We are at an advantage if we know what to expect from a cult. Cultists are very well trained to appear "Christian", and indeed believe they are the true churches, and you need the deliverance! Therefore, be bold and ask the question, "do you believe the group you represent is the only true church on the face of the earth?"
If they reply that they are, or if they are evasive, making remarks like "Well, every church has a measure of truth but...", you have made an early detection of a Cultist.
Every true Christian, if asked the same question, regardless of his denomination, would reply that the true church is comprised of believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, and HE (not some organization) is THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE, (John 14:6). No legitimate denomination would claim that they alone and their members have salvation exclusively, but the cults (the counterfeits) do.

I know what goes on inside your temples, I have some friends that are heavy into being Mormons, they love to talk about theological issues with anyone, however, even they admit that, at first, the belief system seemed kind of out there to them. It is certainly something that they wouldn't have come to a conclusion about on their own.
