My cat has recently (just in the last three days) been freaking out over the ceiling. He sits in the loungeroom and something will catch his eye and he'll watch the ceiling, and move around staring, as if he is chasing something, or he can see something. Thing is, nothing is there. No marks, no bugs, not anything.
He'll be happily playing, see it and run. Afterwards, he seems upset or agitated. Is this normal? He is an indoors cat, and is less than a year old (bout 9 or so months)

Edit: Also we've checked the entire house, no fly or bugs of any sort. And it can't be a relfection of anything as the sun doesn't hit our loungroom. I am hoping that it's a plausible explanation.....

Maybe there are mice in the roof area. Cats love and get excited with high sounds mice and squirrels makes which we as human can hardly hear. They go nuts. This is the only pausible reason why he is doing this.

My one cat does the same at times. I think he "remembers" that the front room ceiling is where he has seen the occasional fly or the sun reflecting from a wrist-watch, things of that sort. Even though the original point of interest has now gone, he seems to be looking for it. As for the agitation, it could be frustration. Some years ago, we closed up a crawl-space to keep our cat safe. Still, every now and then he'll check that spot and wail ... as if he's missing something.

Cats tend to see and hear stuff that we can't. It could be a really small fly or it could be light or shadows moving around on the ceiling. If you have the fan on in that room or an adjacent room that can cast shadows on the ceiling. My kitten loves watching them.

my cat does that too.he always stares at the ceiling corner.Cats have very good ears.if your ceiling is the most top floor and there's a roof right over it, then there could be a bird, raccoon, squirrel, etc. pawing at the roof.if not, then i don't know what the problem is.he could be fascinated by the lights or he may see something else.

It could be spider webs which are hard for you to see.

It could also be a reflection off a ring, mirror, or anything shiny you have added to the room. What you ignore or your mind processes as a reflection or a shadow can look like something else to your cat.

Cats chase gnats all the time, and usually we won't see those. No doubt he's watching tiny flying bugs.

I agree with Honey. I would check the attic...with raid in one hand and a humane rodent trap in the other.

Cats are crazy. Just show them lots of attention early and they'll be awesome.
