Hi, i'm 16, looking for a job
I cannot come up with people who I can put for references, so I need some help
I have a tutor who has been helping me for.... almost 9 months and he should be okay with it..
and I was thinking about the school librarian since I volunteered as an assistant for last 2 yrs (n this yr too)
would she be annoyed by this? she's around 50ish or up(i assume) and she's totally friendly.
and.. should i list them or put 'references upon request'?
HELP :) and thanks

2 is okay, 3 is better.

Ask the librarian first. I am sure she would be okay with it though. Did you do any extra curricular activities in the past year? If so, get the teacher or coach to vouch for you. Showing up to practice on time all the time, is a great measure of responsibility.

Put down your mom or dads best friend. It's better if they know the boss you are interviewing with. At your age the best referral is from a family friend that knows people where you want to work. Nothing better than "he's a good kid". My company hired two teens this year based on that advice.

And put your reference on the resume. It implies that you are prepared. Nothing more annoying that having to ask for that information. People forget to ask for it all the time, so if it's there, that is one hurdle down. Besides your resume won't be very long right now, so you can use the additional information.

You need three references. In your situation, for a first job, they can be anyone except for family members.

Type up your references' names and contact information nicely on a separate sheet. On your resume put "references available upon request". Hand over the separate reference sheet if and when it is requested.

Teachers are probably used to this, and don't mind as long as you are a good student. So you are well on your way. You just need to find one more reference.

The two people you mention would be good references. Ask them first if it's OK, but they'll probably say yes. Also, teachers who know you fairly well, a pastor or youth leader, a neighbor who has known you a long time.....

Usually you don't list references on your resume, but it's a good idea to have a typed sheet with the names, addresses and phone numbers available if someone asks for them on an interview, or if they have you fill out an application and there's a place for references.

It's OK to say "references on request" if you want to and if you are looking for something to fill up space, but it's not necessary - it's assumed, and they'll ask for them if they want them.

List "references available upon request" but remember, be prepared to have those references available. So you may want to let the people know that you will be using them for applications.

In addition to your librarian, how about asking one of your teachers?

If you ever did any jobs - babysitting, lawnwork, dog walking - you could use those too.

If you're 16, I wouldn't worry about references on a resume unless its actually a professional job you're seeking.

I'm sure the librarian would be more than happy to help! You can also use a pastor, a neighbor, or a teacher.

kihteacher has good ideas. Also, if you have done babysitting or other type work like that. Otherwise the people you have mentioned sound good. Good luck!

At your age, I wouldn't worry about having references. If they ask you for a couple, it looks like you already have them.
