My dog has flaky, dry skin in places and his coat isn't so shiny. He also gets frequent ear-infections (though we clean his ears often) and lately has been having some itchiness and watering of his eyes. None of this is severe, just ... ongoing. I'm wondering if he's mildly allergic to or sensitive to something in his food, since it doesn't seem to be seasonal. I'm considering changing his food.

My question is this ... has anyone noticed an improvement in skin and/or coat condition after switching to Canidae from another brand? And, if so, would you describe?

If you feed your dog Canidae, why did you choose that brand? And, how does it compare cost-wise to the more widely-available so-called "premium" brands (Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet)?

Thanks for answering ... I appreciate your help!

No, have never given the dog rawhide ... and the vet seems to think he looks just fine, but ... I've been feeding him Eukanuba since I've had him, as did the breeder, and she recommended it ... I just lately did the research and found out that I'd been essentially feeding him high-priced garbage (not much better than Purina or Alpo!) I assumed the higher price meant it was a good food. Kinda pisses me off that I didn't know this. I just figured that anything $35-$40 a bag should be good stuff, but apparently it isn't.

Well my dogs were shiny and didn't have dry skin prior to changing to Canidae.. But they are still very shiny and soft, no flaky dry skin, and do not smell doggy at all..
It is possible that your dog is suffering from a food allergy.. Do you give your dog rawhide to chew?? I have one who her ears are fine.. If she gets rawhide, then they suddenly become very point and bother her a great deal.. She develops yeasty ears anytime she eats rawhide.. Can't give it to everyone but for one, so we don't buy it at all anymore.. No rawhide, no yeasty ears..

I haven't noticed an improvement really but then I wasn't having problems with skin / coat previously.

I like the human grade ingredients, no corn, no wheat and no fillers.. I like that it isn't preserved with BHA/BHT and Ethoxyquin.. Good ingredients. The dogs eat far less because they get their nutrition easier, they poop far less.. and it's much easier to clean up .. Nicely formed stool and very easy to pick up..
It's far cheaper over all than all those crap grocery store foods.. We feed less and it's actually less per bag than Iams or Purina..

Kiss Me Deadly : No sense being p*ssed off about it.. EVERYONE has fed Iams or Purina or Eukanuba sometime or another.. Until fairly recently it was nearly impossible to find out what most of those ingredients are.. And over the years the companies have changed the quality of the ingredients, as well as the actual ingredient listing on the bag. As they were sold out to other companies, you could easily see the quality going swiftly down hill... One batch the ingredient list looked fine.. Week later they had changed their food and it wasn't worth using to bait a rat trap..

Eukanuba uses corn as the second or third (and sometimes the first) ingredient in almost all of their foods. Corn is a common allergen and many dogs have problems with it. Switching to Canidae or some other food that doesn't have corn in it will probably make a big difference in your dog's skin and coat as well as his ears.

I chose Canidae because it has high-quality ingredients and is very affordable. It helps that my trainer, who works with a lot of dogs with severe allergies (and actually prefers raw, but understands that not everyone can or is willing to do raw) recommends it. Price-wise, it's very reasonable. In most places, you can buy a 40lb bag for around $30-34.

I fed Canidae yet 2 of my canine in no way adjusted to it -- they have very gentle digestive platforms. I even have when you consider that stumbled on rawfeeding (entire prey kind eating habitual) and could in no way look returned. i do unlike all kibble. era. Why no longer look into it? that's fairly hassle-free as quickly as you get the carry close of it, that's going to be extra fee-effective than Canidae, and that's the final difficulty you're able to do on your canine wellness-smart. That being stated, IF I fed kibble and IF i did no longer have 2 canine with very gentle stomachs, i might feed Canidae ALS (those are 2 very enormous "ifs" although). i've got self assurance Canidae is as extreme high quality as the different grain-ridden kibble. Canidae additionally has a grain loose formulation that's purely rather much as good as all different top type dehydrated doom nuggets.

Canidae is a good fod but if yuor dog seems to be having allergies i'd feed him Wellness fish & sweet potato formula. And i'd add fish oil pills to his food. Fish is loaded with omega 3 & 6 fatty acids which adds oils to the dogs coat.
