We have the choice to follow God or follow satan. Free will is key here. It is rather difficult to understand God because He is outside of our reasoning. He is outside of time. Take a look at this link. It really made me think of God in a different light.
http://www.christiananswers.net/q-aig/aig-c039.html
Also, you may want to read Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis. He was a former atheist, and he was an excellent author. He makes a good point of God being outside of time. It's as if He is in the past, present and future all at once. It's hard to fathom I know, but trust me, this book is an excellent read.
The bottom line is that we make our own choices in life. Since God is outside of time (being in past, present and future) He knows what is going to happen to us. Not because He can predict the future, but because He is in the future (outside of time). We all make choices in life. We either accept His help or not. Heaven or hell. What is your fate? You decide. This is by no means a scare tactic like many atheists believe. Rather it is a realization of what our fate could be. That is, if you believe. Free will.

To put it into perspectiv Satan was the most perfect Angel created. But in
Isaiah 14:12–15.You, the bright morning star,
have fallen from the sky!
You brought down other nations;
now you are brought down.
13You said to yourself,
“I’ll climb to heaven
and place my throne
above the highest stars.
I’ll sit there with the gods
far away in the north.
14 I’ll be above the clouds,
just like God Most High.”
As you can see, God could have prevented this also. But he did not. For example--if you see,say a cat, with a broken leg, and you kill it in front of a crowd, what would they think of you? Not very proud the crowd would be of you.But if you take to the vet., You are a hero. You have made a choice.God knew what would happen, but he made a choice. One that would be correct. He also has given you a choice.
Matthew 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.

God is a God of love. He is also a God of justice. He told Adam and Eve not to eat of the fruit of the tree. They chose to disobey. Yes Hell does exist as it was created for satan and his followers. People have a choice to make to follow Jesus and with the help of the Holy Spirit try to stay on the narrow path or to follow satan and go where he leads. Since the garden we have been able to discern between good and evil and as Christians we chose good over evil. Not everyone does and so the world has people who are doing satan's bidding. The path is narrow and satan will do what ever he can to lead a believer from it. How can God be evil when He sent His only Son Jesus to die for your sin and mine. If He were evil then a nation divided against itself can not stand as Jesus said when He explained He was not casting out demons by satan. God is a God of LOVE for all those who will parish and those who will be with Him in heaven.

The answer is complicated because your understanding is clouded. If you had a truly open mind, I could state this in a less complex way. Alas, this is not so.
I have had problems with this before. And then I realized why, it's because I kept attributing choice to being the sum of our experiences and the outcome of beliefs inherited and not chosen. This is not so. Each and every one of us has the ability to make our own decisions.
Here's an analogy from the matrix: we would all chose to accept the matrix (sin) if we were aware of the choice on only the most basic level. However, some of us would chose to reject it (salvation). Adam, unfortunately, was not Neo.
It helps if you liberate your thinking from the corporeal environment. Here's a little thought problem: Do you think with your physical brain? Do you love with your physical heart? Once you realize the ridiculousness of saying that your body is responsible for thought and choice, but merely the machinery operated by something else, it because quite clear that the soul is a necessitating property of Humanity.
Think of the Universe, and everything God created until the 5th day as something that revolved around a prime and central set of rules. When God created man, he formed dirt in his own image and breathed into his nostrils to give him life. The life was a soul, a part of God that is eternal, and like God, is completely free from the rules and controls of this world.
God was not compelled to speak the Universe into existence, nor was he compelled to make any other decisions regarding it. He made them because He has free will. When he made man, he passed this choice onto us.
Now we go back creation once again. "In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth." In Heaven, God is king. Satan, however, is the prince of the earth. He has power over it. In Heaven, everyone must obey God. It cannot function without the order that comes from obeying him. All who freely submit themselves may enter.
Sin, is not submission to God, however, but his enemy. It cries out for the flesh to become king. It is self-serving and self-heading, and totally ignores God. In Hell, Satan is king. Because he wants you to be self-serving, whatever you think you are doing for yourself you are also doing for him. Because of this, you are his when you die if you do no freely submit to God and live in heaven.
God is not evil, nor is hell a farce. Hell exists because God rules only the willing. What is he to do with those who will not serving? He must give them over to the only other master there ever was. Hell isn't bad because God made it that way. It is that way because Satan rules it, and he wills for his captured souls to suffer.

The bottom line here is that God wants us to love him. That is all he ever asked of us. He could have taken away our free will, he could have made us all robots who did anything and everything he wanted us to. But is that love? Not really. In order to receive genuine love, you need to give genuine free will. God is love. Really, thats the best way to explain it.
Think about love, and all its attributes. God knew, sure, but he still gave us that chance to make a mistake. Thats love. He is willing to wait forever, just to hear us say "I love you" back. And that too is love. Now imagine it like this. You are married, and your spouse cheats on you. If you loved them, that will break your heart. Say you forgive them, and they do it again. and again. and again. How much can your heart be broken? It hurts the first time, but it hurts more and more every time after that too.
You loved them and they only ever spurned you. You would have given anything for them, your very soul even. And they rejected your love. That is pain. That is anguish.
So here is where everything comes together. The angels are the servants of God. They are his little robots, if you will. Some rebelled. If you rebel and win, good for you. IF you rebel and lose, you get punished. Needless to say, God won. Hell was made as punishment for the angels, first and foremost. Satan is not the ruler of Hell, he is the one who will be punished and tortured the most.
So let me ask you this question. When you reach that breaking point, when you can no longer forgive your unfaithful lover, what do you do with them? When you have given them everything and they still reject you, what would you do with them? You want nothing to do with them. Ever again. Because they will never change. They will only ever crush your heart and reject your love. Your love will turn to wrath. They pummeled your feelings, and felt no remorse?
People don't cheat on accident. If you don't want love, then you will get wrath. If you have ever known someone with really deep and sensitive emotions, then you should know exactly what I am talking about. Jesus loves you infinitly, and then you reject that completly? Well, what were you really expecting?

The answer is love. God created a being with the freedom of choice. How much more can a being love if he can choose to love, rather than be forced to love? The ultimate love story is the story of Christ dying so that we may accept and love Him. Plain and simple, that is the heart of Christianity. It's not about the laws, the religion, the dogma, or anything of that sort. It is about US choosing to respond to HIM. Don't lose faith. Your questions are normal, I think we've all asked them. It's hard to think that if God loves us He could let some of us live eternity in Hell. However, it's not God choosing to let us go to Hell...it's us.

Hello, Alack:
When God created the universe, it was perfect, and there certainly wasn't a need to destroy transgressors. Sin originated with Lucifer, the perfect one. He could surmise, lie, and misrepresent God's perfection, and 1/3 of the angels swallowed his line.
God has a plan to deal with this Cosmic Conflict, and in the centuries around Christ's time, people knew the timing of this controversy--we have forgotten. But God hid a Bible code, sealed until the "end of the days." It will help you understand His plans: http://abiblecode.tripod.com
Concerning Hell, it is an invention of Satan, not the Bible. It does not exist as we know it, but follows closer to Greek mythology. In the Hebrew language, it means grave. Yes, the wages of sin is death--in the grave. For the saints, the gift of God is eternal life--in paradise. Yes, sin and sinners will be eliminated from the universe. This plan is also revealed in the online book listed above. Read all five chapters.
Shalom, peace in Jesus, Ben Yeshua

Being Christian means that you have entered the covenant of the New Testament. This means that you have, WITH A SINCERE HEART, accepted Jesus as your Lord and as Savior of your eternal soul. Is THIS what you mean when you are saying that you are Christian?
Now, on to your question. God has given us ALL the wonderful gift of FREE WILL. With free will, we are able to do anything we want, and to say anything we want.
However, with free will, we are responsible for our deeds and words. (consequences of our free will)
Does "hell" exist? Yes. It's clearly stated in the Word of God.
Why would God punish us for choosing to do wrong instead of doing right? Can you imagine ANY greater love than to let people do what they want? Yes, there is reward for leading a good and righteous life within the covenant of the New Testament (salvation of the eternal soul and entry into the kingdom of heaven). There is also a consequence for denying and rejecting that very same covenant.
No, God is not evil. He is kind, loving, and merciful...and willing to let us decide our own futures.

God does know everything however, he gave us the ability to make decisions of which He knows but doesn't choose the final outcome. He wanted His creation to be free to choose whether they wanted to become His child or not.
Hell needs to exists because Satan and sin exist. Satan and sin deserve Hell. God did provide a way to keep us from going to Hell. His Son, Jesus.
When God created Adam and Eve, He make them perfect. They could have lived forever and could have had all of His blessings. They chose to disobey. This disobedience brought death and destruction to man and we are still disobeying God today.
God knew that man would disobey. He came down from Heaven in the form of the man Jesus Christ to die for our sin nature and our sins. This is the way that God SHOWED His love for us.
All that God requires for us to recieve this free gift of salvation is for is to realize that we have sinned, that we are repentant (turn away from sin) and accept Jesus as our Lord and our Savior. Then when we do this, we come back into the personal relationship with God that was intended for us in the beginning.
The purpose of us becoming a Christian is that we become God's child, we are under His protection, we are saved from Hell and we have God's Holy Spirit to guide us and help us live our lives for God which causes our lives to be better and happier here and now.
God is not evil. He is loving but just. Those who have accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior have no fear of Hell. Those who reject Jesus do, because they are still dead in their sins.

Do not give up faith. God gave man free will. Man had the choice to live his life, his way. He can choose to do evil or good and so God cannot control what he choses. God can only give signs and opportunities for the person to come back and pray. That person chooses his/her life path and he/she will answer to God in the end and have his/her life judged. God does not want us to go to hell but if we sin and turn away from Him than sadly we make that choice.
