Hard water has a higher mineral content. In general this is beneficial to you because it is one more source of minerals your body needs. Of course it's not so good for appliances and plumbing, and can taste funny.

Mineral content is equal in both hard and soft water. Hard water has calcium and magnesium salts and a softener EXCHANGES sodium into the water to replace those minerals (sodium does not build up like calcium/magnesium). Generally, you end up with the same amount of sodium as the amount of minerals you start out with. Now, whether this is a problem depends on how hard the water is before it enters the softener. Extremely hard water of over 175 milligrams per liter calcium/magnesium may tend to have a salty flavor for those who are sensitive. Also, if the softener has a mechanical problem and does not completely rinse the brine out and the end of a cleaning cycle, you may end up with very salty water. For most people, soft water does not pose a health risk, however, anyone on a sodium restricted diet should not drink soft water.
