I have a litter of pure-bred basserriers (bassinji/terrier). I'm thinking about charging $1000 for males and $1200 for females. Is that reasonable, or should I ask for more?

Sorry to say, but they are NOT purebred. They are mixed breeds ; AKA mutts.

You should be able to get about $50 each for them.

you're selling mutts not pure-breeds
even if one parent is an akc registered bassinji
and the other parent is an akc registered terrier
when you put two different pure-breeds together you don't get a litter of expensive pure-breed puppies!
all you get from that mix is a litter of mutts!
here is a link to the complete breed list of dogs according to the official akc website:
http://www.akc.org/breeds/complete_breed_list.cfm
I want you to notice that no where on that list is "basserriers" because "basserriers" are not a recongized breed of dog
"basserriers" are mutts
why would anyone pay $1,000+ dollars on a mutt, when they could pay $100 or less for a mutt (or even a real purebreed) on petfinder?
the puppies on petfinder are just as cute and in far more need of help:
http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?animal=Dog&breed=Basenji&preview=1&exact=1
http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?animal=Dog&breed=Terrier&preview=1&exact=1
(the above links are so you can see for yourself)
continuing to breed mutts and over-charge would qualify you as a "backyard breeder" the abundance of backyard breeders is one of the main causes for over population of dogs and cats in our country
if there weren't so many thoughtless backyard breeders then there wouldn't be so many dogs thoughtlessly put down in shelters
(think about it-then have your pets spayed/neutered)
the only person you'd be able to sell a "pure-bred basserrier" to for a $1000-$1200 dollars would be a total idiot!!
some people (like you) might try to pass off a mutt mix breed as a "designer-dog" however you can dress it up any way you want: a mutt dog is still a mutt dog
I know I love my mutt dog, however I also know that there are too many mutt and pure breed dogs without homes so I spay /neuter my pets and leave the breeding to the experts who know not to mix breeds

this is not a PUREBRED dog, at the least its a Hybred dog. They are not considered purebred, you can not show these dogs, the only way you could register these dogs is through a crap no name registry for mix breed dogs. If you can sell them and people will buy them for a grand you are a lucky person... if people are that stupid to pay that kind of money and believe they just bought a purebred, they deserve a crap bred dog from a breeder who doesnt know what they are doing. More power to ya. I have a crapbasserrier (actually hes just a Basenji Mix) in a rescue thats only 75$ because its old and no one wants him. I think thats a more appropriate price, since he's nuetered, vaccinated, housebroken, and well mannered too!!! I dont think you offer that with the price of your puppies.
Good luck hope to not see them in my shelter when they dont want there purebred crapbasserrier any more.

How in the heck do you figure they are "purebred"???? They are a mix, period. When did people get so ignorant???? If you can show me where AKC or the Rare Breed Association reconizes them I'll eat my words. what a joke these "designer breeds" are. If people are stupid enough to pay outrageous prices for mixed breeds then that's sad. Your dogs are not worth any more than what you paid for their shots and spaying and neutering them. They are going to have that aren't they??? Leave the breeding to people who know what the heck they are doing and who do their research. It's people like you who are adding to the over population problems in the shelters, not the responsible breeders. Shame on you.

Just out of curiosity did you come up with that name all on your own? You must be very talented creating new breeds and all. Have you even seen one before you neglected to spay and neuter your own dogs. At least with the other mixes you can google them and find something but all that comes up for your "purebred basserriers" is your question. maybe you should just get them dewormed, vaccinated and spayed or neutered and charge nothing as long as they are going to a better home.

Seriously? Are you joking or are you serious? There is no such thing as a purebred MUTT. Anything over the cost of shots and a spay and neuter is unreasonable! Welcome to the world of backyard breeders, people with no morals who (obviously in your case) only care about the money. Not whether every puppy in their litter of MUTTS gets put down in a shelter. GEEZ you cant even be specific as to what KIND of terrier. And it's Basenji! one S one E one I.... I think this has to be a joke, i cant imagine that there is someone that stupid that is able to work a computer.

they are not "purebreds" they are a mixed breed dog! They are only worth about $50 or so.

A dog is considered purebred when it breeds true for 6 generations.. meaning the pups all come out looking the same, and have the same temperment and drive.

Just because you took a purebred basenji and a purebred terrier together,, you get mutt puppies.

They aren't purebreds, they're mutts, and you are irresponsible for bringing yet ANOTHER litter of thoughtlessly bred puppies into a world that's already bursting with them. If you do manage to sell them,I hope you will sell them with a spay/neuter contract and then use the money to have the parents fixed.

You cannot call a dog a purebred if it is a mixed breed dog.. Even if the dog is a product of 2 purebreds, but different breeds. The offspring are NOT purebred.. They are mixed breed dogs.. Value =$50.

Even 2 dogs bred that should have been registered, but were not, and have no AKC papers, they cannot legally be referred to as Purebred.. Your dogs are mixed breed dogs.. Value as pets.. $50.. Designer breed?? NOT ON YOUR LIFE.. They are mutts, to sell them any other way is illegal and fraudulent, as well as unethical

You do know that a basserrier is not a breed don't you? It is a mixed breed dog period. You may have cute pups , they may be nice dogs, they are mutts.
I'd be surprised if you recover the costs of vetting the dogs.
However PT Barnum said it best "There is a sucker born every minute." Good luck finding one.

Contact Basenji rescue for help re homing the pups that you can not sell or give away.

how is it purebred if it is a basenji mix? Call it for what it is a mixed breed dog or say its a basenji/terrier mix. If your creating a designer dog you need to be more specific on what terrier you crossed your basenji with. I think its too high considering people pay that much for a pure bred basenji if its got good blood lines. And yours are mixed.

You need to be really careful about calling a dog purebred if it isn't. People will want registration papers and blood lines to prove these things. I would only charge a little more than shots/food/ and maitenance per puppy.
