The vet says the next step is a biopsy which costs a fortune. I've made an appointment for one but I'm hoping someone else knows what he has and can make a suggestion to help him. He doesn't scratch the area and the sores are spreading but along his back only.

Could be allergies. I have a cat like that and needs steroids.

Have you ruled out food allergies? My puppy started getting sores on his tummy when he was about 4 months old. Vet thought maybe urine was getting on his tummy when he went potty, told me to treat the sores and it will go away. Never did. He usually gets a treat when he comes in from outside and one day his treats were all gone and I had a different kind. I noticed that after a couple days the sores went away. Turns out he's allergic to Milkbones! Stayed away from them and haven't had any problems since. If you already ruled that out then go with the biopsy or get a skin scrape done. This should help narrow down the reason for the sores.

Try switching his food. I don't know if dogs and cats work the same this way, but my cat had some sores on her head that wouldn't go away no matter what we tried. Then we switched to a different kind of food (it was a special "hypoallergenic" kind), and the sores on her head cleared up almost immediately. Apparently allergies in cats frequently manifest themselves as skin problems--maybe it's the same with dogs? It can't hurt to try a different food, anyway, and it would be a cheap thing to try.

Ask your vet if you can try the dog on Cephalexin,as it is excellent for skin infections. Also, have you used a medicated shampoo? Sebalux, alternated with Malaseb ( in case it's from yeast ) would probably help. You might also ask to try topical Mupirocin;it's an ointment that really works wonders on skin infections.Good luck.
