When my son was 12 months old, I decided to wean him from his pacifier before he was too attached (and old enough to ask for it).

So my husband and I started playing a game with him. We would get one of his spare pacifiers, put it in our mouth, and pull it out while making a cute sound. He started to mimic us.

So next, we added a step. When we pulled it out, we would make the cute sound and toss the pacifier on the ground. He thought it was hilarious, and started doing the same thing with his pacifier.

After a week or so of this, we began to grab his paci before he could pick it up, and we quickly hid it (in our hands, under the blanket, somewhere he could immediately find it). If we repeated it enough, we could distract him while his paci was hidden, and he would go on playing without it.

He was off the pacifier (during the day) within 2 weeks. We still gave it to him during naps and at night, but he kept surrendering it as soon as he woke up.

At 16 months, we transitioned him into a toddler bed, so I didn't take the paci totally away until he was 18 mo. and comfortable sleeping in his new bed. I thought it would be a big ordeal, but he didn't put up a fight at all.

He does still try to suck on his pj shirt while I am rocking him at bedtime, but it only lasts about two minutes while he settles down. Plus, he has not starting sucking his thumb (which I was a little worried about.)

A pacifier will not to permanent damage to your son's teeth for a while yet, but the longer you wait, the more attached he will be and the harder it will be to break him from it.

Good luck. Try the suggestions that you think fit your son's temperment. Only you will know what will work for him.

My son just turned one and he decided on his own that he didn't need his pacifier. When he had a pacifier I would always loose them so I stopped giving them to him during the day. Instead I would give them to him at nap time or bed time. I had to slowly wean him off of it. Eventually I quit giving them to him all together. The only time he needed them was when he was sleeping. I hope this helps you and your son.Good Luck.

You can try giving him a toy to play with or sing him a song as you cradle him in your arms. The idea is to distract him and make him forget about the pacifier. Good luck.

Weaning from a paci is like weaning from the breast. Unless the child is developmentally ready, you are going to run into some serious issues. How old is your child?

I don't have any practical advice, as my kiddos never had pacifiers.

how old is your child? And you start by only giving it to him at nap time and at bed time. Your child shouldnt have it all day long in their mouth, it can delay speech, and cause tooth problems. It takes time, but pretty soon, you can cut out the pacifier at nap time, and then at bedtime.

Snip the top off , so there is a hole in it, and he will lose interest. Worked for my son, he still chewed on it, but in a week or two he lost interest. Another thing we did was buy him a plush teddy to replace it. He will cry and be frustrated but will eventually get fed up.

My son did the same although he was a little older. After a few days he forgot all about it. Youjust might have to give him some extra loving those few days.

a pacifier is something that makes them feel comfty.. sort of a security blanket.. if u wan2 take it off.. permanently.. u have to do somethng to it and tearing a small hole or rubbing something spicy on it..

When my daughter was 8 months old we tossed it out. She hunted for it a bit... but I think she forgot about it pretty fast.

i hate to say the unthinkable....but you are going to have to let the child cry...=( I weaned my daughter off of the Binkie at 16 months....I asked my doctor for a nicer way to wean her, but he said...no...he said if they cried for it just give them something else they love..a blanket, a teddy bear...ect It took my daughter about three days to forget..I just put her to bed without it and of course she cried, but not for long....I thought it would be tough because my daughter loved her Binkie but she did great!!!! Good Luck
