Visit some thrift stores. People give those places old SLRs ALL the time. I've personally gotten a Pentax K1000 for $5 with a flash. The camera works like a dream, and I just have to get a little accustomed to it. I also found a Bell & Howell/Canon Canonet 1.9 for $8.

Going to thrift stores and flea markets is a good thing. From what you've described, it sounds like you are going to need durability, so I'd look for a Canon A-1/AE-1 or Pentax K-1000. Any of the cameras from when they were made of metal should do well.

Not to mention the older cameras tend to force you to get better by not giving the Automatic Crutch.

These are all great suggestions. For a photographer, it's knowing the basics and then learn to get deeper into the game because you can buy $$$ camera and still not know what you're doing! It's the photographer not the camera taking the shots... but it does help to find one that can take a decent shot and feel good about the what you're doing. Sony "W" series 8 or under MP is great and relatively cheap. even the canon 570 is a great buy. I recommend you read some reviews on these at dpreview.com and go from there. They are very thorough and even explains a lt of digital camera jargon. My thought is that you should buy something that is reliable and worthy of being a first camera. I've done my part... Good luck!

IF you are learning photography in a class do they want you to buy an old 35mm camera? An old 35mm SLR is the best way to learn about different settings.
For digital cameras there's quite a few that let you have SOME control for settings of shutter speed and aperture. One being the Canon PowerShot A630.

Almost none today have truly manual setting, they have partial manual settings and you can tinker with the EV to fool the camera.

In film the Canon Rebel T3

In digital the Nikon D40

"Cheap" and "Good" are pretty much mutually exclusive terms.

First, take an introductory level photography class at your local high school or community college. The course will help you "get into photography"

With all your new-found knowledge you'll be better able to intelligently select a camera to suit your needs.

this is definitely not cheap, but maybe you can get it off ebay or something. Canon Rebel (the digital camera one with manual settings) just remember if you get one that takes film, film can be very expensive and so can the lenses
