It got covered in sand.

Ugh! That's not good! Does it make grinding noises when you try to use it? That's like having sandpaper installed in every working part the sand hits. You'll need to take it in for repair, or replace it.

If it's just a little sand, shake out as much as possible, and you might be able to use it for a while.

The two worst enemies of electronic equipment are moisture and grit. Your camera didn't get wet (did it) but it got an overload of grit! As stated above, check to see if you can hear or feel and grittiness when moving the lens or any other part of the camera. I'd be very careful about using anything to clean it, even a blower, because you could drive the sand deeper in.

A good photo service center should be able to give you an estimate. Check your manual or your camera maker's website to find the nearest authorized service center.

Good luck! Hey, it's better than my Minolta SLR that fell off the top of my moving car (big dummy me) and got run over by the car behind me!

You can save it and use it as a paperweight.

Repairs will likely cost more than a new camera so start shopping.

Visit cameraarmor.com and bonicadive.com and look at the protective coverings they offer. Choose the one you think best and buy it for your new camera.
