When I started my truck up this evening the engine sounded nearly like the muffler was off of it. i was driving it down the road and was thinking why it sounded so rough and loud, and I noticed the lights beginning to flicker a bit on the dash lights and then I noticed the temerature gage was all the way over to Hot as far right as it could go.

I had driven it for 10, maybe 15 minutes by then I pulled over and I noticed , not much but just a bit of smoke coming out of the hood area, it soon stopped.

I called the Auto parts store and spoke with a gentleman there who told me that it was probably my water pump being locked up and not to drive it.

I had a new water pump put on at the Toyota dealership I think last June (not this June of 07 , but the previos June) when I had a new timing belt put on.

I think my engine is non interference, but I was wondering if I did any serious damage or not to it.

I left it there and will have it towed in tommorow to the Toyota dealer

Also when I spoke with the dealer last , they were telling me that on my model of truck there was a Toyota recall on the head gasket , and that they would replace the head gasket for free.

I dont know if it has anything to do with this problem I have tonight, but I was told by the auto parts place that it was either the timing belt or the water pump.

well...first off, your serpentine belt is off...gone, no longer with the vehicle(more than likely). Without that, your alternator does not spin(flickering lights) your water pump also does not spin(overheating aka temp guage pegged) your a/c pump(if equipped) does not spin...so, that's the cause of some of the havoc. I'd be willing to bet that the serpentine belt broke or burned off( the rough sound) due to something locked up. I'd be leaning towards the alternator, since when the bearings go out on those, they make one heck of a racket. So, if you can...check your truck out before they do any work to it. pop the hood, and see if the belt is there. If it isn't, try to turn all of the pulleys by hand...the one that's not free is the one that caused your problem. It could even be the tensioner pulley...that also has a bearing in it, and that could also cause the rough sound, and when it locked up it'd also burn the belt off. Hope this helps!

As has been stated, your engine is a non-interferance. However, contrary to the other post, it has 3 belts, not a serpentine, and the water pump is driven by the timing belt. If the pump fails, it ususally takes out the timing belt shortly afterward, so the engine quits. Yours kept running and overheated, so the pump was turning. The most likely cause is lack of coolant, which points to the headgaskets (usually), and if they will fix it under the recall, Toyota will pay for ANYTHING related to the problem, all the way down to a completely new engine. But (see my answer to your other post) if it has had a warranty repair on the head gaskets since Oct 96, you are out of luck. Good luck!

hmmm...that's a tricky one.

If the timing belt broke, you're engine wouldn't run at all, so I think you can rule that out. This means you don't have any damage from possible piston/valve interference.

It sounds like you have a 3.0 v-6 in an early, regular cab T-100, right?

A head gasket leak could cause overheating. You might want to take them up on the recall work.

You could always see what's locked up by removing the belt (if it's still there) and trying to turn the water pump and alternator by hand.

Well you'll probably have it at the dealer before long. I'm curious to see what they find.
