I was promoted and now I’m stuck in the office unlike my previous position, which I have to do lots of field research. I need an excitement in my job, and in-office job gets me bored. My performance decline and I feel like I disappoint my colleagues. Should I stay in the same position and struggling to improve, or is it better to find another “field” job?

For your own happiness you need a new job. Stay put until you find one and try to amuse yourself without getting caught. As long as you have an exit strategy the job will be bearable. if you tell yourself to stick it out, eventually you will hate it so much you will sabotage yourself.
your job is critical to your happiness so take this seriously.

I think that you should talk to your boss about it. Tell him/her to get you time doing field research if possible. If not, you will not be happy there and will ending doing worse probably. Not saying this to get you down but thinking in reality because it sounds like you like moving around and not just being stuck to a chair all day. But if it doesn't work out try to get switched to a different position or your old one.

Discuss it with your boss .. they obviously thought they were doing a good thing for you ...if you prefer being out in the field I am sure they can accommodate that..

get a game boy psp or somthing or find a job you would enjoy get then quit your old one
