It can be chronic, never going away. This, along with incontinence, is the most common reason for nursing home placement for all patients with dementia. Families get to the point where managing the patient at home becomes impossible.
I am strongly in favor of placement for patients with moderate to severe dementia. The best bet is to search for a nursing home with under 100 beds. You can look them up online at your state's nursing home review site-- it will have the lowdown on each facilitie's deficiences as of their last inspection, which is done on an annual basis. Inspections are not scheduled; the state reviewers arrive unannounced so they get a true picture of what's going on in the building.

Are you asking in terms or years or duration during the day? The Syndrome doesn't go away but can be greatly treated to ease the patient. Sundown Syndrome can occur from dusk and through the evening hours. The episodes may last a few hours or throughout the night.
