My dentist recently said to mix 1 teaspoon reg. Clorox with 1 1/4 cups water and rinse with this daily to help stop Gingivitis. Anyone ever heard of this? And is it safe?

Thanks all! I honestly didn't think it sounded like a good thing to do, but I for sure won't try it now...in fact I am going to call him tomorrow and ask him more about why he thinks it's okay to do?

I am sure he said Clorox bleach as he said, if I used the gel kind which is more concentrated, to cut it down to 1/4 teaspoon

I've been doing this for years (per my dentist's instructions), but I put it in the reservoir of my water-pick...

This, with thorough cleaning, cured my gingivitis.

The people answering are ignoring how diluted the bleach is. It's comparable to pool water.

I know this is an old post but I went to my hygienist today for a cleaning and she told me the same thing and does it 3 times a week. She told me to start out twice a week with 1 tbsp. Clorox bleach and 30 tbsps. of water mixed together and to swish it or try to for about 20 to 30 seconds. I was using Peridex... generic Chlorhexidine Gluconate.... She actually said that was staining my teeth.

I use 1/4 tsp of clorox bleach with 4 oz of water and rinse for 30 seconds..I do not rinse afterwards..It really kills the bacteria , gives you fresh breath and makes your mouth feel really clean. I do this twice a week per my dentist..

I was advised by the dental hygienist and given papers to remind me to mix 1/2 tsp. of Clorox to my reservoir in the Waterpic daily. I've just had what is known as LANAP (laser) surgery on my gums as there was extensive damage from the medications I am required to take. This solution is said to be no worse than what you would find in your pool and the goal is to kill the bacteria. He has done a fine job, I've known him for years (though not a patient) and trust him to the hilt!

In case anyone is coming across this still, I personally use the bleach and water mixture to help reverse the decay in mouth, this was recommended by my dentist who has been a family friend ever since I was born. It really works, it tastes bad but it doesn't last to long afterwards.

Like everything else it depends on concentration. Concertration of 2-5% is used to clean root canals. It is strong enough in that concetration to help remove dead tissue and act as a decent decontamination fluid. The recommended dilution of %.05 is recommended by several sources. For an example look at this pubmed report ->

My pareodontist and dental school professor recommended I use 1 teaspoon of bleach to 8 ounces of water in my Waterpik once a week. It s equal to pool water.

my dentist was at a dental conference and it was recommended to put plain laundry bleach in your water pik once a week - be sure to rinse mouth afterwards. Use no more than 1 teaspoon in the reservoir.
